I don't have my manuals for my MC7 8V71 can someone please tell me how much coolant the system holds. Thanks in advance. Andy
There are several different size in rads. Most of the 8V71s had a standard rad some have been changed to match hotter running turbo engines. I had an MC 8 about 10 years ago. I drained the system and added 1 gal anti freeze one gal water to get a 50/50 mix A case of 6 gals I think did it. It's hard to get all out of heater coil and lines. I can't tell you how important a 50/50 mix is. Too much coolant will cause it to run about 10 degrees hotter.
My 6V92/MC9 holds right at 10 gallons in the engine and radiators. This is with the heater gates closed. If memory serves (and it don't a good bit of the time), the whole bus holds about 28 gallons of coolant.
I would assume that an 8V71 would hold about as much, or a little more. Your radiators may be a bit smaller than mine..but around 10 gallons for the engine and rads is close.

Be sure to use distilled water and anti freeze mix.>>>Dan
WHAT ??? :o
no-one mentioned the anti-cavitation stuff
do a search, sure there is a few long discusions in the archives
I just changed my 671, it takes 14gl including the heating system so I assume the 8V71 takes more.
There should be an air bleed valve at the highest point in the engine. Be sure to do that bleed.
Simple-just buy two cases of Prestone anti freeze (12gal) and 12 gal of distilled water. Just start alternating each one at a time, then you'll have some left over to take with you. Regular Prestone for any type of cooling system is sufficient for 71 series since they have dry cylinders liners and are not sensitive to cavitation like 92 series. This is what I use, and when Don Fairchild installed the turbo- the interior of the engine was just about spotless. Good Luck, TomC

I don't have the book handy right now but I know mine holds at least 30 gallons of coolant.
According to my maintenance manual, (printed in 1982), you need 27.5 gallons.
When I did mine it runs in my mind that I used about 32 gallons in an 8 with an 8V71 bought 6 cases of the premixed and had a couple of gallons left over.

I took-out my heater core, MCI8, and put in about 15 gallons of mix to fill the system.
There are a number of people that say any antifreeze is OK. Detroit Diesel recommends the same antifreeze 71 series, 92 series, 60 series.
