Title: Can anyone identify this part?
Post by: Paladin on January 22, 2008, 08:55:46 PM
I found this laying inside the left front air duct, I'm not positive it belonged there but it appeared to, it was fed in from the bottom but almost looked like it was shoved in there. It apparently wires into the hvac breaker box in the left front bay. It appears to either be some sort of thermal sensor or the detonator to end the world as we know it. (Yes, I have a vivid imagination)
What does it do? Do I need it? Where does it go? Where should I stick it? (https://busconversionmagazine.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geocities.com%2Fdax2274%2FIcons%2Fdevil.gif&hash=72f935625b790d605e976488e17a9d10f10bc955)
I no longer have the OTR air in my bus if this is related to that, I only have the heat.

Apologies for the picture clarity of lack thereof, I can take a better one later if needed.

Umm, no, cylindrical copper, about 3" long and appears to have corroded fins at the top.
Really appears to be a temp sensor of sorts.

Check your camera for "close-up" setting....then retake it. Also hold camera very steady or tri-pod it.

Is there any attached wiring?

Yes, if I recall correctly there are three wires connected at the bottom and they in turn go into the air conditioner breaker panel in the bay.

Maybe I'll try to take a clearer picture of both later on. I snapped that bad shot while taking pictures of the larger area.

It's your return air temp sensor that controlled the bus heat and a/c relay. There's a hole in the first bay that goes into the air return tunnel next to the A/C junction box where it would have been. Typically, they were attached to a rod and plate and sat basically in the air stream coming from the rear of the coach.

If you don't need it, send it my way. I could use a spare.

By the way, they're kind of fragile, so treat it with respect. I think there's a thermistor or thermocouple in glass inside it.

You said you still have your OTR heat... you'll want to keep that intact.  It's what controls your heater valve.

I sort of suspected this, I was going to tear it out but had a nagging thought.....

I guess now I gotta put in back in somewhere.

If it had 2 wires it would be a thermocouple, with 3 wires it is an RTD.

They both do the same thing, but a thermocouple has to have themocouple wire to connect to, and an RTD  uses common copper wire.

Ok, here are some better pictures.
It's obviously been added into the existing harness and poorly at that. Three wires, no solder, just a twist and tape. It has a sticker on it that says:
Prevost Car Inc
Piece: #87-0689

I wonder why it was jammed into the ac duct and by whom?
Sorry for the pictures, maybe it'll help someone else another time.

Here's what the MCI version looks like. Has a shiny glass bulb inside it (that's the fragile part).

Hi Guy's,

They are basicly Thormostatic Sencing Bulbs that work both ends of the thomometer.. [heat/cool]

Paladin, looks like yours was replaced at one time....

So should I just mount is somewhere in the tunnel area as Craig was saying it should have been?

Since I'm messing with it it there was way to test it before putting it in? Apply some heat and use a DMM and look for changes?

Yea,

You should get OHM's out of it and sure change when heat is applied..

I would mount it in the general area that it came out of.

Good Luck

I found it stuffed up into an air duct that won't be used, I tore it out. I can see how that might have helped the air but not sure how it would have been able to do anything about heat where it was......unless the heat and air combined in duscting in the wall and wen to vents. My walls were all replaced predating my ownership.

If you look at your center tunnel in the first bay, drivers side, next to the A/C j-box, you should see a round plate. This is where the original was located.

The heat and a/c shared the same duct, so if it was shoved up into the side duct, it could have been a replacement for the original.
