Title: I need contact info for Dick Wright
Post by: skihor on January 21, 2008, 08:14:49 AM
I'm having some trouble with a generator that he installed in our bus, (MANY years ago). I think i have a fragged water pump, and a no start situation.

Thanks,

Hey guys,

I know you only asked for contact information.  But, in case you have trouble getting a hold of Dick:

(1) If you really have a bad water pump, or, for that matter, any other part of the diesel engine itself, pretty much any Kubota dealer can help you.  They're everywhere.

(2) That being said, a bad water pump in itself, generally, will not keep a Wrico from starting.  Most of Dick's generators have two safeties:  Oil pressure, and water temperature.  The water temp safety is a "normally closed" switch that opens, IIRC, at 237° F (114° C).  If you do have a bad water pump, the genny should still start, and run for a few minutes until that temperature is reached.

If the genny cranks but never starts, I would suspect oil pressure.  That safety is a "normally open" switch that closes on oil pressure of about 10psi or so.  You need to keep the start/stop switch in the "start" (crank) position until oil pressure builds to that level in order for the "run" solenoid (fuel solenoid) to open.  No oil pressure, no fuel, and so no start.  You might check your oil level, if you have not already done so.

If the unit doesn't even crank from the on-frame switch, it's likely either the "start" relay (one of two cube relays mounted to the unit), the starter solenoid, or the starter itself.  FWIW, I had a starter on one of these Kubotas seize on me once.  It's a fairly simple replacement.

HTH.

To compliment Sean,
If it cranks, but no start, it might be the fuel shutoff solenoid. Mine went and a simple resistence test confirmed. Did that with Wrico on the phone. Sorry not to be able to remember the exact test, but their units are very similiar and they could assist, as they did me.
Extremely wonderful people.

Thanks guys for all of the info. I talked to Wrico yesterday and they told me they would be glad to walk me thru diagnosing all of the checks and balances in the system. It's mostly checking various electronic devices with a volt meter. GREAT PEOPLE who I will continue to do business with. This genset was installed by them for two owners ago. It was installed in 1989 and they still have all of the info. Outstanding customer service !!
I will have to remove the unit for the testing, and since it's still around 0* in the A.M. here I'll wait for more friendly temps.
