Title: Filter question for 8v71
Post by: Lin on December 11, 2007, 03:13:41 PM
Since I have to get out the Delo 400 multi that my MC-5a came with, I have ordered some Delo 100 40 weight as everyone seems to recommend.  I just looked in the maintenance  manual though, and it seemed to say to use 30 weight.  I assume that Detroit changed that somewhere down the line.  Anyway the spin-on oil filter is a Napa 1970, which is listed as "full flow".  In looking up engine on the Napa site, they also offer a 1749 (spin-on by-pass), a 1970XD (extended drain), and a 1970XE (high efficiency).  There actually might be a couple of others, but it is unclear whether they are spin-ons or cartridges.  What do the experts use?

Lin don't waste your money buying the 1970xd or the 1970xe just stay with the napa gold 1970 because the filters 1970xd and the 1970xe are not going to have any effect on DD recommendations on the oil change intervals  just some bs and more money FWIW

Lin, all NAPA Gold filters are made by Wix, one of the oldest and most reliable filter makers in the country.

We were in business for 20+ years and used only Wix, or NAPA when we couldn't get the filters from our Distributor,  and never had a fuel or oil filter failure.  I still use Napa Gold on my MC5A and won't change to Baldwin or any other.

We're been there...you can trust us.

Wish I had the money spent on 1970s from NAPA in the last 40 years. Yep 30 or 40 will do prefer 40.

I did not know that, Bob. Good to know. I thought I was settling for second best when I got Wix's the last time from OReillys, because it was closer to where I was than NAPA.

Thanks for the info!

Hello.

FWIW, I'm running 40wt all year round up in Southern Ontario.

When I run the coach in winter weather, it gets pre-heated by way of the Webasto or electric block heater before starting.

Once running and up to temp, oil pressure shows the same as summer.

Thinner the oil, the more it drinks or leaks?

My thought is, if it is cold enough to worry about the thick viscosity of the oil when cold, it won't start by itself anyway!

happy coaching!
