Title: Hearing Metallic Noise Not Good ....
Post by: Gary '79 5C on December 10, 2007, 11:07:13 PM
I have completed a sucessful trip from NJ to Ft Myers Fl area. No traffic, good weather, decent fuel prices, great nites sleep in Ga. Life is good.

Second day here, I put the bus in reverse to back out of the driveway ( slight decline ) and the brakes feel like they are grabbing, in that the reverse motion was jerky, and a loud noise erh erh of what I would believe were the front shoes on the drums. This noise subsided as I drove and completed some errands.
I am now hearing a metallic like sound which I believe is coming from the front. The sound is speed dependant, that is as I speed up the noise increases. The sound is also not piercing or will drown out other noises I just get tuned in to what is or not normal noises and this is different.
This noise is also similiar to a faint noise one would hear from a disk brake metal to metal sound. When I brake there is no difference, but some times the noise goes away.
I spoke to Luke today and he suggested to raise the wheels and spin to locate the noise, which I may do later this week, after I locate/purchase a jack.
He is thinking a possible brake hanging up or a broken return spring, but with much conjecture as he to is 1200 miles away...
I am away from my shop and carry limited tools, but wanted to run this by those who may have been there before. I am also not looking to run this 1200 miles back and find possible additional damage.

Again as always thanks for your input.

Hi Gary,
I was first thinking that a wheel bearing is going dry.
But, I would trust Luke judgment better than my noise id'ing.
Good luck

Hi Gary,

I had a noise like you discribe and it turned out to be  loose lug nuts!  At first I tighened them up and it quieted down some but not

completely gone until I removed the wheel and cleaned the metalic build up from the studs. Retorqued, and the noise was gone.

Good Luck & enjoy your vacation
Nick-

Gary,
If you need a shop to use to repair your bus, we are only about 25-30 miles north of you (south of Arcadia right off SR 31).  Jack 863-993-3683

If I were you, I'd be on the road to Jack's place as soon as I could! Good company to help you locate and fix the problem.

Lukes guess makes a lot of sense based on your description. If you've broken a return spring, it could be laying in the assembly dragging on the hub or drum. The loud noise and grabbing could be rust forming on the clean drums as a result of the high humidity
or rain. I used to get that when my bus sat for a bit. Only on one front drum, and only when in reverse. It would clear shortly after
I started driving again, but would always come back after it sat a while in the driveway, though I think it took longer than over
night. I cured it by moving the front brake assemblies to the tag and insalling new drums and brakes on the steer.

Hello Gary.

You have auto-slacks? maybe they snugged up. A little cold contact is common just after an auto-slack does its job.

On the way to Jack's, use the brakes hard a couple times, and see if the heat in the drums stops the noise. As they cool it might return.

When at Jack's, before you do anything, measure the cold applied pushrod stroke, so you know where you started from.

You are catching the common theme? Go to Jack's....

happy coaching!

Gary, all of the above is great information and worth chasing.  I have a 5A and was badgered with a metallic noise...almost a dinging sound at idle in neutral.  Turns out that the drop box was low on GO90 and the straight cut gears were registering their displeasure.  Ungodly noise in the road too......

Just another place to look...hope to see you either at Jacks of Arcadia or somewhere else this winter.

God Bless you all & Life is Good,

With friends on this board why should I ever go anwhere else. I have not had the bus out today as I have been catching up on house maint. I have been paying some one else to complete, also painting interior of a home in Cape Coral.  I have relatives in visiting, but will call Jack Wed AM. In speaking to Luke yesterday he mentioned HeartLand and some one else in Arcadia, I suggested Jack and Luke said to forget his suggestions and go to Jack's. Jack I didnot wish to be so forward, not knowing if you did this commercially. I do not like to invite myself to a party. Thanks for the invite.

Charley, You got that correct about prices, 3.19 Latta SC, & 3.35 Pilot Ocala I 75.

BusWarrior, I need to get schooled on brakes, although around town the noise didnot stop after they heated up, Both the drums and the Alocoa's were heated but the noise continued.

Gumpy, you may be on to something in that if something is floating around in the drum, it may lodge under a shoe and cause the erratic noise and "jumpy" brake operation when I had it in reverse. I had an old bus ( who doesn't) actually a WV bus which had a shoe keeper which rusted and the dime sized keeper lodged under a shoe and I could NOT drive forward, put in reverse for 10 feet, freed it up and later found the problem.

Gatta Go, But thanks to all,
Sincerely,

Gary Pasternak

Two beers & to bed, Will call Jack in the Morning.....
