Title: 4106 starter relays

my 4106 will not start from the starter switch. New starter and bus will pull start in  about 2 feet. . Inside the service panel is a series of relays one of which i assume is related to the starter as it clicks when the button is pressed. I thn all these are original. Can these be purchased ? Its seems like i read somewhere these can be replaced with a 2 pole 12 volt solenoid. Any inout will be appreciated.

Busfever, if your wiring is mostly sound, I would try to stay with the factory circuitry because some of that wiring is very useful.

There is a relay in the electrical compartment that monitors whether the generator is producing any power. If there is no output, the starter can be engaged. If there is output, the heating sytem can be turned on.

That relay is important for what it prevents. It will prevent you from engaging the starter if the generator is producing power. It will prevent you from discharging your coach batteries quickly if the generator is not on.

Since you can hear that relay click when you try to start the engine, that means that the relay or the connections between it and the solenoid or the new solenoid have a defect, if the starter motor is good. This will be true IF good battery power is reaching the starter.

In your manual, that relay is labeled the starter control and generator relay. You should try to figure out where the break in your circuit is.

I think that all the parts that you need are available.

Busfever,

By pass the starter solenoid with a heavy cable like a jumper cable and see if the starter turns. The heavy cable to the solenoid is hot all the time - jump from it to the heavy starter post.

If it does your problem is the solenoid or the wiring from the relay to the solenoid as Tom just said.

Check the solenoid by grounding the small solenoid terminal to the engine. If the starter then turns you have a wiring problem from the solenoid to the relay.

It could easily be a bad relay connection in the rear elect panel, happens all the time.

It could also be that you accidentally hit the mechanic's protection switch on the engine rear switch panel. It cuts off the starter to prevent any accidental starts by someone else while a mechanic is working on the bus.
