Update.
RAMAH, La. (AP) - A burning natural gas pipeline has created a headache for motorists crossing Louisiana -- a 55-mile stretch of Interstate 10 is closed until at least Sunday.

Troopers today diverted traffic while crews moved heavy equipment through a swamp and toward the fire that erupted one day earlier in a sparsely populated area of Iberville Parish.

No injuries were reported.

The fire forced the closure of I-10 from nearly Baton Rouge to Lafayette.

Westbound traffic was routed onto U.S. 190 in Port Allen, and eastbound traffic onto Interstate 49 at Lafayette.

update
Last Updated: 11/19/2007 07:48 AM

I 10 Both Directions over the Atchafalaya Basin is closed due to an oil well blow out. Traffic is being diverted from I-10 westbound at exit 151 (Hwy 415) to U.S. Hwy 190 West to I-49 South back onto I-10 West. Traffic on I-10 eastbound is being diverted off onto I-49 (Lafayette) northbound to U.S. Hwy 190 East to Hwy 415 south back to I-10 eastbound. This closure is expected to remain in effect through the weekend.

There are no changes to report in respect to the well fire or the Interstate 10 being closed. The next update will be sent at 11:00 AM, by State Police Sergeant Markus Smith. Sergeant Smith can be reached by phone at 225.925.6202 or by email at markus.smith@dps.la.gov. This update is the result of State Police (Troop A, Troop I, and Haz-Mat) West Baton Rouge Parish and Iberville Parish Sheriff's Offices closing Interstate 10 at Ramah (milepost 135). The roadway was closed at 4:35 PM, on November 15, 2007, due to a natural gas leak that ignited.

Traffic is being rerouted at LA Hwy 415 going west and I-49 coming east. Both routes lead motorists to US Hwy 190. The aforementioned steps are the result of a natural gas leak in Iberville Parish near Ramah (not far from I-10). The gas leak occurred as representatives with Bridas Energy were drilling to establish a new well. In doing so, pressure built up and essentially blew the line. Emergency personnel were notified and roughly an hour later the natural gas leak ignited.

There are no injuries to report and the interstate is not expected to open no sooner than the evening of Wednesday, November 21, 2007.

Estimated Open Time: Wednesday 11-21-07
