Title: South!
Post by: RMC on November 03, 2007, 01:23:09 PM
We are going to go to Quartzite after Christmas and have read on the boards that the Eagles have a spot there were they park. Where would this be? This will be our first trip south just trying it out for retirement!

I always found it best to just park somewhere and then explore around in the toad. You will find hundreds (or maybe thousands) of people there when you arrive. Find where you want to camp and then go get the coach.

It's a big chunk of AZ desert with BLM permits you can dry camp in. Lots of services available and thousands camp there in winter . there is a small village on I-10 and the junction of AZ 95 and US 95 that turns into a huge jam of RV's Lots of stuff going on todo and see. Jerry

Eagles we try to keep away from our GM's they set bad example for em LOL.

Quartzsite AZ is one of the biggest RV gatherings in the South WEST with over 3500 vendors selling everything imaginable if you can't find it in Quartzsite they prob don't make it anymore and you probably didn't need it anyway. Since my wife passed away 2 years ago I have opted to make it my home spot except the summer months when it hit 128.8 I left until Oct first it was still 118 when I got back.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have there were 15 buses in Scaddan Wash BLM yesterday on my way back from Phoenix area.

I'll take a shot at defining Quartzsite too:

Its a crossroads in the middle of the desert for about 8 months out of the year.  Just a place where trucks stop for fuel and a few hardy desert rats live.  Think a couple of truck stops and an off ramp.

But starting about now the snowbirds start arriving from all over North America.  And the place mushrooms into a lively community until about the end of March.  It started as a rock and gem show and the influence of that still remains but it is sometimes lost in the rest of the flea market atmosphere.  It has developed into a service centre for RVs because so many RVs end up there.  So you can get a solar or satellite system installed and you can buy just about any RV related gee-gaw you can think of.  Plus there are several RV related shows and sales events as well as rallies of every description.

Quartzsite is also a teeming mass of humanity at its height.  You can walk faster than the traffic moves - literally.  Remember - it is a crossroads in the middle of the desert with a couple of truckstops for most of the year.  If you are going there then you should either plan to drive VERY early in the day or bring a bike.  The first time we were there we said we'd never go back but it kind of grows on you and its a rare winter that we don't end up there for at least a few days.

The first time we went there we stayed the night at Rip Griffins west of Phoenix and got moving before daylight.  We crested the ridge east of Q just before sunrise and it looked like we were coming into a city.  What we were seeing though was the porchlights of thousands of RVs scattered out over the desert.  Its really hard to imagine the place without having been there.

I found my four wheeler ATV was the best toad to have as it is much smaller and easier to get around. I also liked exploring out in the desert.
