I am a "newbie busbut"...
Should I clean my existing air filter with some air or replace the filyter all together? If so, What model is a good deal for performance and price?

Any Thoughts would be helpfull...

I just replaced mine. I'd never looked at it and even though the filterminder guage had never budged, I figured I'd better be sure it was ok. Well after I ordered a new one, (before removing the old) the old one turned out to still be in great shape but since I'd put the guys to the trouble to get it in a hurry, I went ahead and replaced it.

If you're talking about the paper filter, I have one that looks almost brand new that I'll send you for the shipping.

They cost about $90 full retail and you can get them for about $70 with a little shopping. I have all the part numbers handy if you need them.

I would go with a oil bath filter as a replacement for the paper. Retrofitting it would be a lot of work but the oil is better and does not need serviced as often. Maybe every two years or so, whichevercomes first.

Chuck is right about the filter minder keeping you "in the know" and saving you a bundle in the long run. I would install that instead of a filter and then do what it told me. Symptom of a clogged filter is BLACK SMOKE.

The last one I bought in Aug, 05, was under $50.

I dind't put it in till this spring, as my vac gauge was not indicating it needed it. There wasn't much in the old one, but I'd
rather just put the new one in every year or so and be sure my engine is getting clean air.

Skip: They wash filters for off road equipment. The word I got was that filters used on the highway get a coating of oily material that doesn't wash well.

I guess I'll quit that practice for my cars. (bus is an oil bath so I won't worry about that)
Though it is interesting that they make a filter cleaner and oiler for the K & N filters
something else I don't use. :)

Considering a new filter element is less than $100, I wouldn't risk blowing it out and possibly creating a dirt inducing hole in the element. When dirty-buy a new element! Good Luck, TomC
