John,

When you get those hinges apart let me know how you did it. Those steel hinge pins rust really badly in that Al frame and I don't see how they will ever come out without being drilled out.

Another problem is once the hinge pins are out how do you then release the bottom inside emergency release handle when it is often blocked by a wall, appliance or something else?? The window frame won't swing out unless this panel is raised up about 90*.

I don't know about the 4905, but on my 4501 the pins are brass with a small (10-32?) tapped hole in each end for a screw (that rusts in place ~70% of the time). The slots in the screws are for installation only - the proper tool for removal seems to be a dremmel type grinder followed with a small punch to knock the pin out.  ;)  Also the hinge pieces are stainless. The screws attaching the stainless to the alum frame aren't usually much more than a corroded mess.

Good point about the latch - Good Luck with it.

I am just finishing closing in two windows on the left side of my 4905.  On the first one, I took out the pins, removed the windows, and then drilled out all the rivets for the rain gutter.  On the second one, I just drilled out all the rivets, and then removed the windows once the rain gutter was mostly loose.  The second one took about half the time or less!

My thought was that I would rebuild the two I removed, but I broke two hardened philips bits in my cordless screw gun trying to get those stainless screws out of the aluminum!  I guess I will have  to lube them up good for a couple of weeks.

John,

Good news on the safety latches, wish my PO had thought of that.

I don't really understand how SS screws corrode in Al? I've never had that problem although there is more than one kind of SS. One type is still magnetic so that one probably corrodes.
