Title: Questions about MCI 7
Post by: champcar50 on October 05, 2007, 06:44:05 AM
I am looking at a 1987 MCI 7 converted bus to buy.  As I am new to MCI buses can anyone give me some advice on what I should look for on this bus prior to buying.  Are there any particular places that are prone to rust or corode?  It seems to run good, starts easy but does leak some oil.  Is this normal?  Thanks in advance for your help.

First thing you should look for is the proper year, or proper make, because MC7s were not built in 1987.

Leaking oil happens. Depending where it's leaking, and how much, would tell you if it's a problem.

Where is it located? Maybe there's someone near you who would be willing to come help you check it out.

7's were made from 68 to 73. Check engine cradle for rust and cracks. When you open the engine doors, the vertical steel tubing next to the hinges supports the engine assembly, these can crack. Also rust in front of the drive wheels. Check under the windows, if the side panels appear to be swelled out, its rust. Major work to correct rust. Minor rust on undercarriage is no big deal. If it has sat for quite a while, there most likely will be corrosion in the air system, too. If you're serious, take a mechanic with you, well worth a couple hundred bucks, could save thousands. It should be for sale cheap. I've had mine for sale for a year now, and it seems everyone wants a newer one. Good luck. Jim

Also check the pieces of channel above the blowers that hold the purge tank and something else(my memorie is bad today!) up there they are sure signs of bigger problems! Then check the back wall of the rear luggage bay! (next to the drive axle) Besure to check it top to bottom! (I seen some rosted at the floor & others rusted at the top!)
FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

NEVER, ever buy a bus without having it inspected by a professional bus mechanic! Make your offer contingent on an inspection. A couple hundred $$$$ here may save you many thousands $$$$$$$ and untold heartaches.
