Title: Correct ATF?
Post by: MedicNovo on September 20, 2007, 06:31:50 AM
Is there special trans fluid the 710HT takes?  I believe I have a 710HT with my 8V71 in an MC8.  It is in the spray booth and they tell me it wont shift into reverse because it is low on trans fluid.  If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks
John

John -

Have them pull the transmission dipstick - if the oil's red, it's plain old, ordinary Dexron ATF.  If it's brownish, then it's probably straight 40wt engine oil.  Either can be used, but my initial guess is that it's Dexron ATF.

FWIW & HTH. . .

Our '73 MC-8 with 8V71 and 740 auto has a OEM placard on the muffler cover inside the Driver's side engine compartment door near the transmission dipstick tube that says "USE DEXTRAN ATF"  Jack

I use 15w-40 oil in my HT740. The place that rebuilt my tranny recommends it for the increased lubrication properties and heat protection.. When they change the fluid they ad a red dye so you know when your leak is coming from the trans
