Title: Any stick radiator hose over 3 feet or metric hose anywhere?
Post by: belfert on September 12, 2007, 06:58:12 PM
Any ideas where to get 1" radiator hose in a stick longer than 3 feet?  All of the radiator hose in rolls I have found is too soft and flexible.

My Dina has a piece of metric stick hose used from the surge tank to the water pump.  It appears this hose is one meter long as I assume that is the standard for metric stick.  3 feet is too short.  The original hose is by Gates, but comes from their Mexican division.

If I can't find 1" stick hose longer than 3 feet does anyone know where to get metric radiator hose?

Brian, If you have a marine surplus store in your area they should have it . Our store in Florida has long pieces. I am not sure about metric. sizes. Marc

try a marine store. West marine or such. marine water hose come with no wire, single wire or two wire and can be in 10 or 12 foot lengths as standard tho they will cut to lenght.

Brian,
Stupid question, but why leave the long, prone to failure hose in there?
Why not replace most of it with a piece of 1" exhaust tube and use short pieces of hose to connect wherever it goes? Muffler shop will put in any constant radius bends you need, it's good for the next couple of decades, and is a bunch cheaper.

Just my way.

Dalla, I guess I figured the manufacturer would have used a metal pipe if they thought it was an issue.  All of the main connections to the radiator are metal pipe with short 4" pieces of hose to isolate vibration.  Replacing the hose would be the easiest option if I could get long enough hose.  This hose goes from the surge tank to the water pump.

Can most muffler shops added the rolled lips to the ends of the pipe?  I'll take the original hose down to the muffler shop down the street and see what they can do.

The original hose is totally shot and I'm suprised it was not leaking.

I tried the local muffler shop and they don't carry pipe 1" diameter in stock.  The owner also said the pipe would get eaten through by the coolant eventually.  They have sold larger exhaust pipe for radiator pipe, but recommended stainless tube instead.  The shop also could not put a bead on the end of the pipe.

I went to a large hose distributor and they found some hose that should work even though it isn't radiator hose as such.

What I will do do is see if my friend who works at a machine shop has some stainless tube that he can make into a radiator pipe for me, but I'll use the hose for now.

Try Burns Stainless www.burnsstainless.com/304tubing/Straight304/straight304.html

They have 3/4" to 5".

Brian,

   FWIW,
Most of my radiator piping is copper with soldered bends.
Don't know how long it will last but it seems to be working fine.

I think my radiator pipes might be the same thing.  The outsides of the pipes are very black, but I had to sand the ends to remove the old hose residue and it does look like copper or similiar.  The ends appear to be a seperate piece as you described.

Good idea Dallas, I'm sure it would be easy to do with copper pipe.
Less hose to worry about in the future......

I have a bunch of copper crimp connectors that could be soldered onto a pipe at one end and connected to the hose at the other. These are 1" and came from HD or Lowes.

If you want to put a bead on the ends of a copper pipe and don't have a way to roll one, I think if you soldered two rings of 12 ga. SOLID copper elecrrical wire side-by-side on each end you would have a good substitute. Those of you that insist on using only STRANDED copper electrical wire in your bus might have a little more difficulty.
Good luck, Sam 4106
