Title: Boy do I feel stupid
Post by: Jerry Liebler on September 10, 2007, 11:09:22 AM
As I posted on another thread, I replaced the diaphragms in my left DD3 at the BK, Dallas & Cat rally.  When I got home I noticed that my parking brakes didn't work.  I consulted 2 experts on such things, Dallas & Luke.  Luke said before you start ordering parts re do the slack adjuster adjustment, sometimes the lock isn't set and they un adjust.  I tried that, to no avail, then I got out the book and read the section on DD3 & realised that I might have interchanged 2 airlines.  When I looked, sure enough the park and lock lines were opposite where they are on the right side.  So I swapped them on the left side and re adjusted the slack adjuster (had to crank it several turns).  Lo & Behold I now have normally functioning parking brakes again.  Apparently the left can was fully extended and locked by the parking mechanism and I'd adjusted the slack adjuster so that brake just never worked.  In other words I drove home with only 1 rear brake and maybe some drag from the left one. Dumb mechanic (me).

Jerry,

This is why I ALWAYS only do one side at a time.

Need the other to compare for my memory loses.  BTDT.  LOL  ;D

Cliff,
He ONLY DID ONE SIDE! LOL ! And at the convenience of using a pit, not laying on his back!

BK is ABSOLUTELY right.  I only did one side, and I looked at the other side for guidance and still messed it up.  I was so glad the ordeal was almost over that I simply rushed a little and never rechecked.  But, BK, I did find, and correct, the problem 'on my back' squeezed under a blocked up bus.  It sure is easier with the pit. BK, thanks again for a fun weekend.  Fortunately nothing serious was lost, hurt or damaged.  I probably was overdue for a dose of humility.

Hey Jerry,
I know you was rushed to get it done so dad could get hus bus done before leaving out! By the way thanks for making it possible for him to get an early start, since I wasn't able to spend the day working on it (as I usually get stuck doing!)
Come on back anytime! I just wished that Mom & Dad had more time to have spent with y'allmand learned a little more about conversions and how we could easily turn the MCI into one in no time for practicaly no $ (LOL !), since we already own it! Now just don't none of y'all go mess'n it up for me tell'n them how long & much $ ya spent on yers until we get started! But on a plus we are all short, so it won't need a roof raise!
;D  BK  ;D

Aw Jerry,  things just look different when your standing and looking up then when your laying on your back.  Plus you don't get that nap to let your arms rest between steps in a pit. :D

BK,
Maybe it's a good thing I didn't know that was your mission.  I coulda spent some time, with your neat parents, making  getting that MCI converted more of a challenge for you.  Seriously though I think you'll find that most DIY converters spend more, sometimes a whole lot more, getting the shell in shape than the rest of the conversion and you'd be starting with a well debugged shell.  I know it has good shocks on the front.
Again thanks, it was great fun.
