Title: I get to wear the dunce cap this week!
Post by: belfert on September 09, 2007, 07:18:44 PM
I should have to sit in the corner and wear the dunce cap this week after my stupid move this weekend.

Yesterday, a friend came over and we put all the framing back together around my radiator.  The bolts I bought to reattach the radiator shroud were too long so we set the shroud in place and decided I could put the bolts in today.

Well, I bought the bolts today and proceeded to try to install them.  The damn shroud was installed wrong!  I had to spend a good chunk of time removing all of the framing again.  I thought I would get the bus running today, but instead I'm back to where I started this weekend with the exception of the shroud installed.

We should have gone to the store Saturday for bolts, but it was late and Home Depot would have taken 45 minutes as everything else was already closed.  I'm hoping to be running Tuesday evening now if it doesn't rain before then.

Been there, done that.

I usually have to redo jobs like that because I get something in upside down, or backwards, or some such stupid thing. I usually try to take photos, but never look at them till I get stuck because I put something in wrong.

The good news is I did get my AD-9 air dryer reinstalled with no issues.  (Don't know if it works until I have a working engine.)  I also got new fog/auxiliary lights installed today and they work.  (The lights need some fender washers to complete the install 100%.)

With my luck recently, the rebuild I did on my AD-9 purge valve won't work.  MCI insisted the part number listed was for the complete purge valve assembly, but it was really a rebuild kit when I got it.  I knew the price seemed too low for a rebuilt valve especially with MCI's prices as high as they usually are.

Brian I think the appropriate acronym for what you did was S.O.P.  I rarely complete a project without one of those gotcha moments.  I'm just at the end of building an oak futon to replace the steel frame futon that is currently in the bus.  I carefully redesigned the drawings so that the futon will fit under the window ledge and free up some considerable room in the living room area.  2 weeks ago I worked late several nights so that everything would be done and ready for the trip we are on right now.  I had limited time to get it completed in time to get the finish on everything and let it have time to harden before we left.  Everything came together perfectly, I used finishing epoxy for the coating, got it on 2 days in advance, got out in the shop early on the morning we were going to leave and started assembling.  Everything fit perfectly.  I put the sections together in the shop with the futon spread out into a bed.  Everything looks great.  Then I folded it up.  Gotcha.  When I redesigned the finished width of the seat I neglected to allow for the fact that the seat portion has to rest on something when it is in the couch position.  I'm out by about 4" - 4" is pretty important in some places and this is one of them.  It won't be a big deal - in fact the finished product will be arguably better than if I had caught the problem sooner but its still a gotcha.  And SOP for my projects.

Hey Brian,

if thats the biggest trouble you ever have, you'll have a nice life ;)

Now we all have learned from it so thank you for that,  you could have posted pics of it backwards too.

I have taken the video camera out and taken a talkie and pointed out important things so i can review it later on the larger tv screen.  Also with work and life and such, worlds have passed by the time i get back to it, my memory was never too good,  and that camera is sitting there anyway.

You'll be up and running before you know it,  good luck

The shroud wasn't in backwards.  There are some little triangle braces at the bottom of the radiator frame.  The shroud was sitting outside of the little triangles and it was supposed to be inside them.  Not obvious at all until I tried to bolt the shroud to the radiator.  The shroud could not be lifted up over the braces without removing all of the framework.

It would be hard to see anything in a picture.

One of Murphy's Laws says "Remove 36 screws in an access cover and then find that you removed the wrong cover. Replace the 36 screws and then see the gasket lying on the ground".
