I'm at Ed Skiba's house now and on the way here, I started hearing air leaking from my parking brake button.
As I rolled up to Ed 's house I was leaking so much air that my brakes were dragging me down. I located where
the air is leaking from, it's the Park Brake Valve Quick Release. It has a relief at the bottom and that is where the air is dumping.
Is this repairable? or should I locate a new one..
Thanks in advance
Nick-
They can be repaired. Just O-rings.
Hi Red,
Thanks, now to try and get it out....
There is alot of piping and wires in the way of the valve. It's dark now, so I will have to tackle it in the AM.
Any more suggestions, please call me... 609-827-7331
Nick, NAPA usually carries them but whether or not you can find a NAPA store open on Sunday is a moot question. I carry one as a spare along with a spare relay valve (but a lot of good that's going to do you now) just in case. They're an inexpensive item to carry for a spare as you'll soon find out and the old, well worn adage that 'if you carry one for a spare....chances are you won't need it' might well apply.
I carry a lot of, perhaps, unnecessary spares...but I don't just carry them for me......
Hope you're able to sort this out.
Bob
Nick: Do you have spring brakes and the leak is at the QR valve above the drive axle? Was your air pressure down below 60 PSI and the spring brakes were dragging?
The general feeling is that most of the air fittings on a bus are safety related items and factory rebuilt exchange units are the best option. Most require a lot of miserable work to R & R and the low cost of replacements is better than repairing yourself. Some use proprietary O rings and you can't buy exact replacements.
hi guy's,
When I set my parking brake, the air stops leaking..?? Could there be a problem with one of my brake cans?
Thanks for the phone call Terry [redbus]

Nick -
Do you have DD3s or spring brakes on your MCI? I know they changed over to springs, but can't remember when. (Look underneath - three air lines going to the rear brake cans are DD3s.)
Different fixes for the different types.
FWIW & HTH. . .
;)
Nick- before tearing everything apart, yes you could have a leaking parking can. You can do the dirty test by using a vice grip to pinch off the parking brake can hose one at a time. If the hissing stops when one of the cans is squeezed off, then you need a new can. A leaking brake can can cause what sounds like a leak. If it is your brake valve, I would just buy a new one-not that expensive. Good Luck, TomC
Nick,
First you need to determine EXACTLY where the air is leaking. Brake can, relay valve above rear axle, service application valve in compartment below the drivers seat, or the actual parking brake valve in the driver's area. when you look at the brake cans, see if there are 2 or 3 hoses conneted to each can. This will tell us whether you have DD# or spring brake. Jack
Nick, how are you making out with your brake problem??
He is fixed and on his way home.
Hi Guy's,
Ed and I found a shop near him with road service. The fellow was real good with checking all the brake cans first and eliminated that.
He emurged from the spare tire comp. with a .10 cent piece of rubber that dry rotted and blew out. It was part of the e-brake, I
think it is a relief valve with two preassure switches connected to it. [It's where the preassue escapes when you set the park brake]
For a 10 cent piece of rubber, it took 2 hrs out and 2 1/2 hrs back in...
So, i'm home now and three things went wrong this weekend.. Crushed the sat dome baad, sat morn inside flat on drive axel,
[leaking extention] and then this air valve... Man, I love Bussin.. Always an adventure!
Thanks all for your input to lead to our finding the problem!
Ed and Sue Skiba, Thanks for your hospitality!
Nick-
Nick I'm glad you made it home safely. What a blessing to have a road service guy who actually knew what he was doing!
What happened to the Sat dome?

Go ahead, you can laugh at me...

Nick,
Glad you found your air problem, that could have been not so good.
About your dome, I hate that it happened. You had one interesting weekend for sure.
Hope your next trip will be easier on your wallet!
Paul
Thanks Paul...
Oh, by the way, I have 3 air lines to my parking brake cans. Is that DD3 or spring?
Thanks
Nick-
Nick,
You have DD3 brkaes. Jack
