Title: KBUNNYSTARR needs thoughts on trip mapping
Post by: kbunnystarr on September 07, 2007, 04:25:53 PM
:) :o :) :o :D ;) ;) Hello Everyone!  Wow...what a long strange trip is been :)   I hope everyone is doing well, I have had quite the summer.....I currently have my bus in Olancha, CA and need to drive it to Redding, CA in the next month...few weeks maybe.  I am gonna home base in Redding for the winter, for about 6 months. The obvious route is 5, but I hate backtracking on 395 to 58 and over to 5 and was wondering what everyone thinks about taking 395 north to either50 w thru sac to 5 or or some other route around there and then over ( west) to 5...are you following me?  how is 395 north of olancha ?  anyone know?

any thoughts on the best way to get to Redding from Olancha?  hugs to everyone, Ive missed ya!

395 is good all the way up to Bishop, I know. I think it is good all the way. You could cut off to Sacramento but I'd look at going on up to Reno and across. I think it is better travel, not to mention that the drive between Sac and Redding is boring and bare.

hi thanx for the reply :D  i know between olancha and bishop is good and agree between sac and redding is bare...i was just trying to avoid out of the way as much as possible and also was concerned about how curvey the road is on 395 north of bishop, and how far i should go north on it before cutting over......i dont want to push my luck :o)

I understand exactly... Looks to me like if you are going to go to Bishop and think about cutting over to Sac, you are already past the worst of the curves by the time you get that far. The turn off through Yosemite is probably also pretty curvy. For keeping it straight, the best bet is down to Mojave as you mentioned.. I think I would just take it slow and enjoy the ride north. Mojave takes you a long way out of the way. On a map, going to Reno looks like the closest and the worst of the curves are just north of Bishop anyway... My GPS and MapQuest both suggest that way and I have it set to not get me on little winding roads.

Where are you moving to? I have friends in Palo Cedro.

I would suggest just taking 395 all the way north through Reno continuing up to Susanville where you'd grab highway 44 north to 299 west into Redding.  Not the fastest, but very pretty.  Much better than the boring drive from Sac to Redding.  I would take an additional day just to enjoy the scenery, and possible stops in Reno and Susanville.  Good Luck, TomC  PS: all are designated truck routes.

;D ;D ;D you guys rock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  i am moving my bus to Redding for the winter.  Olancha is tooo remote for me for any length of time , especially in the cold.  I will use it as a home base and settle in for about 6 months there, I need to chill out and relax  for a good bit of time.  SO it sounds like 395 north it is....i dont care about it taking more time, I jsut dont want any u-shaped road suprises, and want to keep it on safe roads...sounds like its the best bet so far!

u say just north of bishop seems the windy -ist part...who has driven that...how bad is it?  bad bad or jsut take it slow>?  i will have my car in redding already so wont be towing  anything

this is not meant to sound hateful or anything,.... but...

How come the only time we hear from you is when you need or want something?

Last time we heard anything from you was April 16.

Just wondering.

Thanx Richard.

:-\And Dallas, umm, I will respond to your question but wont participate in a discussion about it any further.  I hope I have not offended you or anyone else on here.  I was not awae there was a monthly quota to comply with on # of posts/person/time frame.  I write when I have questions, and when I found the bus sites yrs and yrs and yrs ago I relized thes sites/ boards are filled with intelligent, kind, knowledgeable, helpful people willing and wanting to offer help suggestions and words of thought and suggestions, if one takes the tiem to ask specifically.  I thought thats what this was all about....connecting with others with similar interests and helping each other for good ness sake and human to human kindness.  I am not here to WANT or NEED...and I surely have no advice to offer as I am new to buses and all of this.  If I can help I will/would....but Im not sure how that is possible.  I dont "chat' on line for the sake of chatting...I am outside more than in, I jsut burried, 6 members of my family in the last 2.5 yrs and I have been spending this summer doing somethigns I would regret NOT doing in the future if i didnt, and spendign time for me for the first time in many yrs.....I get on the computer to do business, stay in contact wit friends, adn read up on things I need more knowledge on.  I love my bus, but dont live for it...........I respect the knowledge I am blinded by here...it is vast....and so much kindness in the past....I thought people liked to offer suggestions and thoughts to each other here.  If I am not welcome to ask questions when I have them, I question the motivation and intention of the board............I hope I have properly shown my appreciation for you all here and not offended anyone by "coming and going"......I dont subscribe to ANY board that I have to checkinto...and spend as little time typing as I can so Ican enjoy the green under my feet and the blue above my head.....desks, computers and inside are necessary but not where I spend my time unless I have to.  Peace and blessings to you.

I agree with the route that TomC proposed.  I just drove it this summer.  No worries at all, unless its that in some places its pretty isolated, and in some places there was this summer a lot of road work and some delays.  I did not compare mileage, but the route is much more interesting and pretty than I-5.  I would not hesitate to drive it again.

There were some spots that the cell phone didn't work.  I can't remember just where, and I wasn't trying to call the whole time driving either, so you'll be taking yoru chances there.  All the towns have good coverage, and many spots inbetween.

be in a hurry. Well worth the trip as long as you are in this neck of the woods.

Wow Dallas.  I looked a couple of times to make sure your "signature" was yours and someone did not fake a post by you!  Your post was most unlike your typical posts.

Like others here, I ask lots of questions.  Sometimes I can offer some thoughts to others questions.  However, I NEVER consider a person who does not have enough experience to offer a constructive reply any less of a member than any other person.

I am probably missing your point, but it sure did come across as a slam and that is not the kind of person you seem to be.

Somehow, in my heart of hearts, I can't imagine that Dallas' post was meant to be malicious or hurtful....that's not the guy we all know and respect.

I do agree that his choice of phrasing could have been better chosen, if at all.

Rather than see a 'pile on', which would serve no purpose, let's just convey to Kbunnystarr that her inquiries are welcome on any topic, at any time and hope all concerned will let this pass.

Dallas you was entirely out of line and owe her an apology.

KBunny Starr

If you want a beautiful drive go down and cut over to 58 to 101 then cut over to Hwy 1 and go up the coast route. San Simeon Castle commonly call Hearst Castle My Great Grandad sold it to Randolph Hearst turn of century or so Youll see seal beach and some of the most bestest shoreline in the world. some curves on hwyway 1 but well worth the slower speeds and allow a few days to enjoy.

I did post this on the other board also.

KBUNNYSTARR,

Even though you have not posted much that's OK. It's not how many posts you have but what information you are seeking. In fact I was talking to my wife the other day regarding the fact that only a few LADY'S post here, was wondering what happened to you. Then you post the next day.

You are always welcome anytime for any reason!

I hope you don't feel offended, I am sure that was not what Dallas was trying to say, it did come across a bit differant though.

Hope your trip goes well and you find Peace in Redding.

Happy Trails,

Paul

I would highly recommend NOT taking 58 to 101 and then north.  While it is scenic, the drive up highway one beyond San Simeon is very twisty, on a not too wide two lane that will keep you so busy, you'll miss most of the beauty because of concentrating on the driving.  Then if you continue up to Eureka (pretty drive also, with some two lane slow driving) you'd take highway 299 over to Redding.  I can say without a shadow of a doubt that that stretch of 299 between Eureka and Redding is one of the most Mother of Mother roads I've ever taken-and this from 21 years and 1.3 million miles of cross country driving.  If you were to go on the stretch of highway one between San Simeon and Carmel, and 299 between Eureka and Redding in a sports car that handled well with an over abundance of power, yeah that would be genuine fun-but not in a lumbering 16 ton bus.  Good Luck, TomC

They say great minds run in the same track and as I told Kristine I was thinking about her just a couple of days ago also. Hopefully she will at least check in occasionally and let us know how she is doing.
As far as I recall we only have three female members on the board. Kat does an excellent job of keeping us updated on Dallas's doings (I heard rumors she ducked him in the lake yesterday and made him sleep with the animals) LOL, Kristy checks in occasionally and now we just got to get Kristine to keep us updated.
Thanks, gals. we love having you.

See? I knew it would be taken the wrong way!

All I was asking for was to hear more about her travels, trials and tribulations.

Face it we are all voyeuristic in that we want to know when things go right and celebrate, and we also want to know when things go wrong and commiserate.

But leaving us hanging ain't no fair!

Either like it or don't. I'll not apologize for what I asked.

Again TomC nails it for road recommendations.  I have driven my 41 ft coach down hwy 1 along that 88 miles section of the twisties, between  Carmel and San Simeon.  I'm not sure I ever want to do that again, despite the beauty, even if my new partner would want to.  My front end was over the line a lot of the time, putting me at risk for taking out an exuberant motorcyclist, while the rears were running over things I would have rather-ed they not run over.   My nephew was sitting in the co-pilot seat , looking down at the 300 foot drop to the ocean.  He asked, Uncle Jim, I know you're a good driver and all, but would that 2 ft high wall keep us from going over the edge if you hit it?  I had to tell him no.

As for 299, I drove that section from Redding to the coast and back in one day to pick up my Sunfrost refrigerator.  Some have said they don't mind it, but damn was that full of tight turns, going almost lock to lock at 15 mph for quite a while.  Yes, I will avoid that road and I advise you to avoid it too!!!  Talk about seasick

FWIW we've done the coastal run from San Diego as far as Washington 3 times now - twice with a big 5th wheel and once with the bus.  Its one of the most scenic stretches of road I have seen anywhere in North America, probably 2nd only to the Going to the Sun Highway and maybe tied with Golden, BC.  I wouldn't hesitate to do it again in the bus but you really want to have a lot of time when you do it.  And I have made a solemn vow NEVER to take the bus through L.A. again as long as I live.  Life is too short for that BS.

I live in L.A., and with any city, you get to know the rhythm of the traffic jams.  Course I also listen to the AM radio sigalerts and also have a satellite gizmo that shows the slow areas, then I stay away from the traffic jams.  I generally don't spend more than 15 minutes a day in traffic because of all the alternative routes you can take, whether it be on surface streets or on another freeway.  I work 28 miles from my house and in the morning it takes about 30-40 minutes and in the afternoon about 45 minutes for the commute.  Now if I had to go the other way, I'd be in 2 hour traffic both ways (I go west to east in the morning and east to west at night against traffic).
Anyone coming into or driving through L.A. should do it between 10a-2p, and then with also checking traffic spots.  If any of you are coming through, please post it and I can give you the best route with the least traffic.  Good Luck, TomC

If I may, I too would like to welcome Becky to the Board. To me it's always a joy to hear the gal side of the world of Bus Conversions.

I tease my wife, who's a total Bus Rally junkie, about the girls talking about what Nuts they're married to when they get together. Today she looked at me with 'that look' and said, "What makes you guy think that you're so important that we have to talk about you guys when a group of us are visiting?"

Having been relegated back to my normal status as a "mere man" I guess I got told where the bear s--t in the buckwheat!

Welcome Becky and any and all the gals who wish to join in.

Kristine -

Another thought:

The Feather River Canyon route over CA 70 is a spectacular drive, but, like Hiway 1 between Carmel and San Simeon, you do have to pay attention and not be in a hurry.  You can pick it up at Hallelujah Junction, about 15 mi north of Reno on 395.

This route will drop you down into the valley at Oroville, where you can merge onto Hiway 99 to Chico and then on into Redding.  You can save a little by taking the Durham cut-off, which by-passes Oroville, and is a little more direct to 99 from 70.

(Route trivia:  Sometimes this is the ONLY pass open over the Sierras in the winter when snow closes 80, 50 and 89.  BTDT!)

FWIW & HTH. . .

;)

PS:  Nice to hear from you, and sorry to hear you've had a "trying" year.  If you ever get near Fresno, let me know, would be glad to visit for awhile.  Contact info's in my profile.

Pit stops along U.S. 395 in California

September 9, 2007

Enjoy that ride to mammoth instead of blasting your way to Mammoth on U.S. 395, slow down; there now are more reasons to enjoy the drive. A new Eastern Sierra Cultural and Heritage Alliance map details 20 sites to visit along California's mother road, including national parks, museums and visitor centers such as Death Valley National Park and the Mammoth Ski Museum. To entice visitors to dally at as many sites as possible, the alliance has started a Passport Stamp Program, and the rewards for a stop are free items. Each location will give you a souvenir when you get a stamp in your passport at any of the sites. Request the passports and maps from www.visitmammoth.com  (http://www.visitmammoth.com)(click on Request Information, then check Museum Guide), or call (888) 466-2666. While you are driving from site to site, you can immerse yourself in the highway's long, rich history by listening to audio from the Roadside Heritage 395 project. "Eastern Sierra Audio Tours, Paiutes, Prospectors, Pioneers" is the first in a series of CDs and MP3s with stories of the people and places that shaped the highway. Information and downloads are available at www.roadsideheritage.org (http://www.roadsideheritage.org). CDs also are free at visitor centers and museums along the highway.
