Title: 8v-71 thermastats
Post by: Marcus on September 03, 2007, 06:02:09 AM
I have a 1982 mci-9 that I just had new radiators put in. The old ones were not in very good shape ,but still functioned if I didn't push the engine too hard. After replacement I still had the same problem. I had asked the mechanic several times to make certain the thermastats were ok. He said they both opened up. I checked the temperature with my infrared thermometer and my right side never opens up, even after the engine warms up. I need to use the bus by friday and am thinking about just replacing it myself. Is there any thing specifically that I should know before I do this? I am mechanically inclined, just never changed one on a detroit. Also should a local truck repair shop have this part? I live in Sarasota ,Fl.

Marcus, they are not hard to replace just remove the 4 bolt on the top of each one be careful that you do not twist the bolts off some times they can be a pain also i would replace the 2 seals in the top of the housing and you can get the parts a Napa

Marcus,
For the new thermostat, try SunState Internarional. I think they are on US 301. I purchased thermostats for our 4106 there several years ago.  If you have any problems, give me a call, I am near Arcadia.  Jack 863-nine-nine-three-3683

Marcus,

Before changing out the thermostat you may want to check and see if there is an air bubble in the system right there.
Detroits won't do a very good job of self bleeding or burping and you have to get all of that air out of there.

Also, when and if you do change the 'stats, bleed the system again and again and again.

I hope this helps,

Dallas

Also I don't recall his name, but the guy who owns a local charter bus company just south of Sarasota is a super nice guy and he and his shop should be able to give you good advice or even do it for you! I picked up a bus from him in the fall of last yr (late September or early October) from him for MAK theat he'd bought off ebay!

I have changed both thermostats. Not a big deal. Only one stubborn bolt. I need to put the coolant back in, than we'll see how things work now. $ 40.00 each Thanks Jack for the tips. Marcus
