Title: question on testing coolant
Post by: compedgemarine on September 01, 2007, 03:20:30 PM
I need to pull my radiator and cant decide to keep the coolant or not. I know Detroit says to use ethylene glycol based coolant but knowing the PO there is no telling what was used in it. is there a way to test if it is ethylene based or methoxy propanol based? all I know at this point is it is green and what little I drained looks good so if it is reusable and the right stuff that would help.
any ideas on determining its origins is appreciated.
thanks
steve

They alaso have test strips you can use to determine if it has enough additives, and not too much bad stuff.  I'm not sure what they are called, but teh dealer uses it everytime I bring it in. Change the coolant whenever it does not meet spec.  Keep from having nightmares with the radiator and water pump and block.  I bet Napa sells the test strips.

DD, Napa, or any other truck parts place will have the coolant test strips! I personally get mine (and the coolant additives, and filters) from NAPA. Of course I get most of my other off the shelf parts from them also, but that is because it's so easy to call and say send me this, this, this, & that and when the delivery guy/gal shows up I sign a ticket and at the first of every month Dad pays the bill! LOL!
