Hi everyone,
This is Jimmy, we posted a month or so ago saying we bought a Moosecreek Motorcabin and that we are on a 5 month road trip. Well, things were going great, but in the last 2 days we have had to put our dog down and now we are stuck on the side of the freeway with what looks to me like a blown engine or something really bad.
There is oil all over the back end of the bus, and when we pulled over the engine stalled. Now up to that moment the bus was working fine, not overheating or oil pressure issues, everything was normal. Maybe the oil line exploded or something??
Anyone with any help would be so appreciated. We called Good Sam and they said they were going to send someone out in the next half hour or so, but I know you guys will be able to help me.
Bad week.
Hi Jimmy,
Very sorry about the bad week. Especially about your dog. I'm sure that he was a loved member of your family.
I know in a couple of cases where it looked really bad engine-wise, it was actually a busted hose, etc., One of the more knowledgeable guys should be responding very soon.
In the meantime - where are you? There may be someone nearby who can help.
BTW - I modified your title so we'd get a lot more eyes looking at the post. This group is awesome & has helped me many a time in situations like this.
Best Regards, Phil
Jimmy - if you are comfortable with it - you may want to post a number where someone can get in touch with you. We will make sure to delete the phone # when you are back up & running if you would like - hope this helps, Phil
Thanks Phil, Chief was a beloved member of our family and we are sick over his death. This is serving as a nice/bad distraction.
We are on the 99 North in Pennsylvania. I don't know exactly where we are but we just paid a toll about 15 miles ago. It appears, according to Google maps, that we are between Wolfsburg and East St. Clair, somthing like that.
Since there was no smoke and everything was normal before the car next to us flagged us down to stop, we may just have a busted hose line or something like that.
We shall see... Thanks for getting back to me, you guys have always been good to me and my wife.
619-392-4074.
Thanks Phil.
Jimmy,
Like Phil said, sometimes the "oil all over the engine compartment, can look lots worse than it sometimes is....".
First step to determine exactly what the substance is. You said oil, are you sure it's motor oil? It can also be ATF, manual transmission fluid, steering fluid, etc, etc.
I once had a fuel cross over fuel tube crack, the crankcase filled with diesel fuel, and it smoked VERY bad and had fuel all over the engine compartment. Looked lots worse than it actually was. Fixed the cracked fuel pipe, drained and refilled the engine oil pan, and we were back on the road within 6 hours.
Again, sometimes not as bad as it looks. Determine the fluid, check hoses close to see if one has rubbed through from abrasion, if a fitting has cracked, of if a seal has split.
If you can get to a Napa parts store many Napa stores can made hose/fittings.
Try to keep the faith until someone can determine the exact nature of the problem.

Hi Guys
This is Roilyn, Jimmy's wife ...we were praying for a diversion from being sad after our sweet dog died and I guess this is it. A bit bigger diversion than we had hoped but it is a diversion none the less.
The Good SAM guy came and said there is diesel in the oil tank. He is taking Jimmy back to he Detroit Diesel shop to determine our next move.
The mechanic said...it does not look good.....
Thanks for all of your support...We really appreciate it.
Roilyn
Hi Roilyn & Jimmy,
Sorry about Chief..
It looks like you are west of Pittsburg, nearing I-70.
Don't get too worried yet , It could still be something not so dramatic. like a fuell line under the valve cover,
or a stuck injector...
Keep us posted
and Good Luck
Nick-
Roilyn,
Don't give up hope....
The fuel in the oil is possibly a good sign...
Possibilities are a broken fuel jumper line, trashed injector, bad fuel pump, and on and on.
If the engine hasn't been run too far, those things can be a simple fix, (relatively), even though there is a mess all over the bus.
Just hang in there, and keep your spirits up. We are all trying to think of ways to help you.
I'm sorry to hear about Chief, I know the pain of losing a close family member that way. Others here do too. The pain gets less after awhile, but you never forget the love.

I just called Jimmy. He's on his way with a mechanic to a Detroit Diesel dealer. Seems to be ok for now, not on the side of the road anymore.. I was gonna give him a phone number of a place in State College, PA - not too far from him. Let's wait and see what the DD tells him.............
Sammy 8)
If anyone talks to him the best DD guy in PA is Byron Hassinger, Hassinger Diesel Service.
Untill the 4 stroke became common in buses around here thats where Capitol Trailways Johnson Bus, Wolf's, Capital Area Trasit et al sent thier 2 strokes.
Located in Middleburg, PA
hey guys
Jimmy is not on the side of the road ...I AM!!!! :D
He left me ( and our remaining dog who is still very sad too) with the bus while he went with the mechanic to the shop. I don't know what that is going to accomplish but that was the mechanics suggestion.
So, yes the bus is still on the side of the road which i am reminded of every time a truck flies by and shakes the whole bus....
sorry to get your hopes up....
you all are so awesome and good to us...we really appreciate it
Roilyn
Hi Jimmy and Roilyn, I wish you were closer to Kentucky so we could help you. Our prayers are with you. Tomas
Thanks Tomas..
We will take all the prayers we can get.....
Some more not so good news.....
I just talked to Jimmy and it looks like we will be here until at least Tuesday as the Detroit Diesel place can not look at it until then.... OH JOY!!!
They are on their way now to tow us....
Thanks again for all of your support, prayers and suggestions.
Roilyn
Roilyn, I am so sorry to hear about Chief. That really hurts, especially to have it happen while on the road. I hope you are able to get back on the road soon and continue your trip. I was going to call you and extend my sympathy over the phone but I realized that the number is your husbands cell phone so I figured he is probably pretty tied up for the moment. If you have a phone you can call me if you are bored and would like to chat. Eight four three four nine six eight two two five.
Where are you headed after you get up and running again? It would be nice if you guys could come to TN and stop here at our rally and let some of these busnuts see what they can do to help you feel more comfortable finishing your trip.

Sorry to hear about Chief. Just letting you know that all of us are reading of your plight and praying for you. I'm sure everything will work out ok.
For what it's worth, I live in Wilkes-Barre, PA (in the northeastern part). If there is anything I can do, please let me know.

I just called Phil. I live about an hour away. (No bus, but I love them anyway!) He sounded okay, except he quoted car rental at $80.00/day. >:( He couldn't take my number at the time, But I'm looking into car rental rates that are lower near Somerset Greensburg/New Stanton PA). Enterprise is usually pretty good. FWIW: They are about 2 hours from Pittsburgh and 3 hours from Washington, DC-Baltimore. They are in an interesting part of PA if anyone is interested: there is some French and Indian War history...Just a thought or a hint for anyone wishing to get out of town and perhaps visit.... :)

Like Richard said, thanks for the help you offered.

Sitting here, reading this and wondering what Jackie and I would do if their shoes were on our feet. Thanks guys, and gals, for keeping their spirits up. It will all work out in the end...the only solace in a predicament like this is the knowledge that time doesn't stand still...and each moment, although it's full of heartache or
seeming desolation, passes and ahead lies the answers.
Most important, Roilyn, stay safe out there...keep the door closed and don't let anyone in that you don't know. While there are some great people who might offer assistance there are also cretins whose motives aren't the best.
Most important, stay safe and things will work out for you. There are a bunch of good BusNuts watching the Board and any who can respond...will.

Jimmy & Roilyn,
Sorry to hear of your troubles and sadness.
Hopefully the coach is just in need of a minor fix and you will back on the road soon.
PADoug,
Seems as if theres always somebody nearby when someone has a problem, Thanks for being there for these folks.

Very sorry to hear about the loss of your pet and breakdown!
Was wondering if Good Sam's service would tow your bus to the next truck stop? Assuming that the truck stop would allow the bus to be dropped off at their location, it would be much more safe than sitting beside the interstate.
Any word on the cause of the breakdown?
Did Jimmy check the engine oil after the engine shutdown? If it had no oil, you probably have a broken external line or fitting, if it's overfull of oil and fuel mixed?? Could be fuel pump seal, injector, jumpers broken or loose. If your engine is a DDEC controlled engine, it would shut down before low oil pressure caused a problem.
If it is DDEC, is the engine indicating a code? Check engine light goes out after 3 seconds?
This is a situation where a little personal local assistance would be invaluable.
Sorry I cannot do much to help, but, if you have an MC9, 96A3, or 102, with a 6V92, I'm available anytime to discuss your breakdown if you wish a 2nd opinion (or 3rd? ). I have parts manuals and service manuals for 6V92s. Be happy to check anything for you.

Hope things get better really fast for ya'll!

Hi JR,
If I remember correctly, Jimmy has a 6V92 DDEC

Hi Doug,
Thanks for jumping in w/the offer to help - and welcome to the board! I can tell you fit right in here. ;D
Amen to "staying safe". It is definitely a scary feeling to be roadside while vehicles are flying by at 70+ mph. It's a feeling I know I will never forget. JR has some really good troubleshooting ideas to look at to get a better feel for the situation as to what is going on. Especially if you are still near the bus & it is not locked up in the shop.
Jimmy, Roilyn,
I am praying for you guys - please continue to let us know how things are going & if you need any kind of assist.
Kind Regards, Phil
Thanks folks. It's too late to leave them my number now(12:30AM). But I'll check with the board, and yes, I'll update my profile a bit more.
Nick and Richard, nice to meet you. Obviously I love the East. I've already mentioned in the chatroom to Dallas and Frank that I don't REALLY wanna turn wrenches. Actually, I've grown to appreciate the historic buses, kind of like old cars. I don't think an old 1930 type 250 model 377 would make a good conversion. ??? (We can start a new thread on where I found a pic of that one, maybe tomorrow.) Maybe it has something to do with sitting in the front seat of the bus all the time when growing up. And no, I wasn't some sort of Hellione that got me "forced" up there. It wasn't a "short bus" either. :D
My hats are to you guys for saving these beautiful beasts and allowing them to live retirement with some dignity. You obviously have my prayers too. Anything I can do to help...
Doug
Jimmy and Roilyn,
So sorry for the loss of your beloved pet and for your unfortunate experience on the road. I hope someone is getting you off the side of the road by now.
I'm probably the least qualified to comment here except to offer a comment. I just signed up for Good Sam in anticipation of buying a conversion. I asked lots of specific questions re. services available considering size, weight, and so on. I remember specifically their rep's responses. I was told that if you are on the side of the road like you are, they will immediately tow you to the nearest SAFE facility such as a campground or garage. If repair facilities are not available there, they will then tow you AGAIN to a QUALIFIED facility. Has that been the experience of others on the board?
Dennis
Hi Guys,
Thank you so much for all your help, thoughts and prayers. We are off the side of the road and into a pretty bad hotel room, but we will be in a better place tomorrow, so we will be fine. Sorry for not getting you an update last night, it was crazy. I will share a part of it...
...When we finally found a place to stay last night I (Jimmy) thought I was sweating really badly on my left side, which was pretty weird but it had been a weird few days so it was par for the course. When I took my shirt off there was blood everywhere. Pretty scary. Turns out I had some how riped off a skin tag and man that thing bled like CRAZY. Took over 30 minutes to finally get the bleeding to stop. Crazy. Anyway we are finally ok and we are resting with our dog Dixie and enjoying the beautiful day in PA.
When we hear what the verdict on the engine is on Tuesday I will post it here. Until then, thanks for all your help. My wife Roilyn really appreciated your encouragement and advise while I was gone, so thanks for that.
Jimmy and Roilyn
Hello again Jimmy & Roilyn,
Very sorry to hear about Chief I know it is very heartbreaking to loose a family member at anytime and even worse on the road in the middle of nowhere without having friends. family, or familiar things and places to help comfort and take the pain away!
I also am sorry to hear about the "Moose", but at least the "Moose"is a mechanical item and can and will be up and roaming again soon! I want to offer any assistance that myself, our shop (Busted Knuckle Garage), Dallas & Cat, or anyone we know can provide to make things easier for you! Please LET US ALL KNOW WHAT IS SAID TO BE THE PROBLEM WITH THE "MOOSE"! Before making any major decisions about the repairs!
#1) Because there are way too many people/shops that will take advantage of your lack of knowledge/experience with these things, and many of our members will be able to tell just by the story they give you, or WHO they are "if they are trying to take you for a ride"
#2) You are in area where several of our very knowledgable busnuts are familiar with! (and of those Tekebird/Doug is a very trusted, and reliable source of info! He is not the only one, but I can say you are definitely in very capable hands with him!)
#3) If things turn out to be as bad as you first feared/suggested it may be to your advantage to have the bus towed to a shop (even if it is some distance away) where one or more of us has experience dealing with to be sure you get treated fairly, and the "Moose" gets cared for properly!
Please feel free to contact anyone here at KY Lakeside Travel or it's Busted Knuckle Garage for advice or assistance! As well as anyone else on the board who has offered assistance!

Thanks alot Busted Knuckle, I really appreciate you and everyone else on this board. We should find out tomorrow morning what the problem is, and then I will post it here so we can make sure they are not trying to screw us. Thanks for everything guys, your the best!!
Jimmy
Jimmy after reading these posts and your description I would look at the fuel lines cross over tubes under the valve covers. This is a common occurence on these detroits if I was the mechanic assigned to this work order thats where I would start. It's not that common for a fuel pump to cause this problem and a injector coming apart usually will show lots of smoke before coming apart completely.
So a oil change and filter and a fuel line is probably what you need actually pretty inexpensive but sure ugly looking when you open up panels in rear kinda of makes heart hesitate.
Looking forward to finding out source of problem.
i'm available for consultation if needed
LarryH
I have been following this one for a bit now too. Really want to hear what the final outcome is. Hope it is something simple.
Larry has a very good point! A long time ago I had an 8V92TA DDEC that had a similar problem, I'd just bought the coach and was on it's first charter trip! Only I found out by coming to a stop light and the engine died! I could restart it but if I didn't rev it up to keep the oil pressure up it would die again! When I got to the hotel (about 3 miles up the street) I had about 12 gallons of super thin fuel/oil showing on the dipstick! I caught a ride out to a Walmart and bought 40W oil in quarts and some drain pans. When I got back to the hotel I changed the oil in the hotel parking lot (I had a spare filter as I always carry 1 of ea as a spare!). The next day I limited the amount of time I ran the coach and also stopped by an Oil Distributer and picked up some Shell Rotella T in a couple 5 gallon buckets and a couple of cases in gallons & 2 used empty buckets. I stopped at a NAPA and bought 6 new filters. And every night when I got to the hotel I changed to oil pouring the used oil in the used 5 gallon buckets, and going by the dropped off the old oil by pouring it in their recycling center container. I did this until I got home, and then we checked it out and found some cross over tubes leaking. So I changed all the cross over tubes. Then I sent it out on a day trip and it still came back in the same way 2 times as much oil/fuel as it went out with! This time I borrowed a pressurized dye injector that hooked onto the fuel system at the filter block and injected dye thru it until we found that 6 out of 8 injectors were leaking (like to never found it as they were leaking very slightly while cold and the engine off, but at night after getting the engine warm and using a fluorescent spot light it was obvious!) around the base!
After changing all the injectors it ran like a champ and never had another problem for the 3 yrs I kept the coach before selling it! So if one is leaking, replace all of them! It'll be in your favor on down the road! I don't know how long your coach sat before/while being converted, but I do know it sat some after being converted before you bought it! Mine had sat about about 2 yrs prior to my purchasing adopting it! FWIW! ;D BK ;D
Update: Greetings from the Bedford, PA McDonalds. Our aircard is not working now...AHHH!!! so I am using the Mc'd's wifi access. I got the verdict from the DD people. A fuel injector failed. Something else was wrong but I can't remember what it was, I was just thankful I hadn't blown the engine. The guy said the bearings were fine, so that is good. They are having the parts delivered tomorrow so if all goes well we will be back on the road about this time tomorrow (Wednesday).
Thanks again for all your help and support, we REALLY appreciate it!!
Jimmy
BN I will ask to make sure they checked all the injectors, hopefully they did. Thanks for the advise.
Very spectacular looking failure for not all that much $ to fix. More inconvenience and a raise in blood pressure than anything else. Glad it worked out.
Thanks for the update. Keep us advised please.

Jimmy, Praise the Lord Jesus that they have it figured out and it won't be a fortune or a new engine. I am happy to know all is working out for you. Tomas
Amen! Just remember ya got plenty of time to make it to the Bus Rally @ my place this weekend NOW!

After all you have been through you needed some good news!
Hope you are able to continue your trip, I know you are one short, I'm sorry.
We just picked up a white pekingese that was resued. So now we have two, a silky terrior also. They are great to have around!
God Bless,
Paul
If you have a bad injector, that's simple enough. Are they replacing one injector? Or installing a rebuilt set?
May I suggest that you check your oil frequently once you're back on the road. Modern DD mechanics have no respect for the delicate jumpers found in 2 stroke DD engines. They must be torqued accurately or they'll leak.
Any increase in the oil level would indicate a fuel leak.
The oil should be checked at some repeatable interval...such as 15 minutes after shutdown, and always before cranking. And with the bus level. Out of level will alter the oil level readings.
A small handy device (which you may have) is an infrared temp gun.
It is a small handheld device that will show these sort of problems in the early stages by comparing temp variations of the exhaust manifold.
If you get a cool cylinder when the engine is at normal op temp, you got a problem brewing.
The more you drive the coach, the better your senses will become for "issues" that crop up. Anytime you have a gut feeling that something isn't right, pull off at some safe place and do a walk around. Look at both side of the engine, check the wheel hubs for excessive heat, whack the tires (or check pressure), look at the water level, and check for anything leaking from the engine area. So it's a false alarm....now you'll feel better. Still, develop a feel for the coach. Mr MooseBus has a personality and it will tell you how it feels. Often before it shuts down. May I ask what bus you have? And what year?
I'll assume that you have an MCI 6V92TA, If you have an 87 MC9 you have DDEC engine control..."fly by wire" if you will. Post a good description of your coach....?
Hope all works well for ya'll!
Best, JR
JR,
They have the "Moose Lodge" that MAK had for sale for while. Even though I've seen it inside & out I am still a little vague about it! (my mind is sorta fuzzy like that sometimes) I know it's a 102 and think it's a C not sure on the yr and it does have a DDEC 92 series in it (again I vague as to a 6V or an 8V). That's all I can help with at the moment! ;D BK ;D
Hi all,
It was listed as 1993 MCI 102C3, 6v92 DDEC.
Hope this helps, Phil
sorry about your dog, my heart goes out to the both of you, about your bus !!!! [ content deleted ] - PJL
Sometimes I have been critical of MAK in the past, but onemule, your comment is really unfair and I would say out of order.
To have a maintenance issue such as this come up would be totally unforeseen. In fact I bet MAK still doesn't know about it. ITS A USED VEHICLE! What part of that don't you understand? So I'm not sure what axe you have to grind, but please save it for another time and place when its more appropriate.

Wow onemule, nice way to make friends and influence people. JT4SC and his family are on the road, they just lost a beloved pet, and on top of that they break down on the side of the road. Then here you come with your words of encouragement. Don't you think they have enough problems and feel bad enough about everything right now, without your cutting words, too cut a little deeper, and adding more pain to their plite.
If you have something to say then go to the man himself, and tell him what your problem is, or just put it on the board in its own post like a man, for all of us to see so we can discuss it. Don't muddy up someone else's post with your garbage. MAK is the best bus site on the web and if you have something constructive to say, then say it. Other wise take your garbage somewhere else.

Thank you for that helpful & informative post onemule.
Now everyone reading will know how irrational you are & will just laugh at you & your posts.
I've read your saga on several boards & the conclusion I've come to is - anyone with the expectations you have, shouldn't buy used! The courts made a decision, now it's time to move on with your life.
When someone acts like this, just who do you think will want to help in times of need? Not many when the risk of getting slammed is so great.

Hi Kyle,
No need to be sorry. This board has set the standard for clean, family toned, bus information...
Everyone can now see, how "even" our members will instantly jump in and uphold our standards when
someone "that does not know how clean we keep this BBS" new jumps onboard to slam another.
Great responces by all..
Nick-
One mule has already been warned previously about badmouthing or flaming on the board.
We have been very fortunate the past few months without any of this type BS and I can assure you that if it happens again I will again delete his post and I suspect that Nick will possibly take further action. We do not need or want this type of conduct.

sorry about your dog, my heart goes out to the both of you, about your bus !!!! well that is what happens when you buy from mak period..............
OOPS SORRY.

WELL SAID!
Now back to our regular scheduled program.
Paul
I appreciate the responses also as members try to keep discussions on track and helping their fellow busnuts. I've removed a few of the posts so we can get this back on track & helping Jimmy & Roilyn. With the exception of the original post which took this thread off-track, all were appreciated.
Again, thanks folks.

Phil,
Thanks for keeping us and this board in line.
Your efforts are appreciated by those who are serious about how this board is operated.
