Title: Slide out in a GM bus
Post by: Jerry Liebler on August 23, 2007, 07:51:50 PM
I just got my Sept Bus conversions magazine.  I'd bet Dennis Harris doesn't read this board.  If he did he'd know that you can't put a slide out in a GM bus.

I was told on one of these boards that I couldn't do a roof raise in 10 working days and be in Nashville Tn. in 14 days. good thing I don't listen sometimes  ;D

I have read that you shouldn't raise the roof on the GMC's either, the one in the BCMAG looks just fine, and my 4106 has been doing well with a 6 inch raise for 10 years or more.
Shows that you can't believe everything you read these days

Slide out, Roof raise on a GMC!

Never works and they all have split in half.

But, I have figured out how to overcome the main design problem.

The biggest problem is the additional gravity put on the center rib.

What I did was to drive down to the everglades at 10" below sea level.

Raised the bus 10" during a full moon when the pressure is at maximum.

Then when I went back to my house at 80', now with the gain of the "fullofshitski effect" thus eliminating

any chance of a reverse rotational proton collapse.

My calculations show this should hold up well, except for an error I keep getting for a leap year.

For any of you thinking of trying this, make sure you line your ball cap with tin foil first.

If you don't, the aliens will read your mind and mess up the calculations.

Golly Cliff....my sides are hurting from laughing so hard...which isn't fair to you because I just probably don't have the depth of understanding the universe which you do. :-\

Fast Fred was a stickler for 'doing it your way' and it appears you did....and with panache! ::)

Bob

Aren't those the things you have for breakfast with Surp?

You can also go down to the local place and get them... International House of Panache!  ;D ;D

Yeah, but they no longer serve Buckwheat Panache, so what's the use?

There is an old Scenicruiser for sale near me. I have been saying how cool it would be with a roof raise! If Cliff and Jim can do their buses I don't see why this one couldn't be done. I might have to do some Photoshopping!

The PD4501 needs no roof raise, they are as perfect as it gets. ;D To do so would adversely affect the lines of the bus. I've seen altered 4501's & the sense of proportion & balance was lost. :'(

Besides, the 4501's are of a limited production run & everyone knows they are lousy units to start with.  :o they were so bad, greyhound had to rebuild (including a complete repower) all of them at least once during their service life & add reinforcement plates to most of them after that just to keep 'em in service!

Only a crazy person would want one because of the difficulty in getting parts. ;)

Now exactly where did you say this old scenicruiser is?

You are absolutely right about the lines of the 4501. But I have this crazy thing about liking to stand upright! haha... My thought was to raise the entire roof 6-8 inches just above the line of the front side windows. Nothing too drastic. If done correctly, someone who didn't know probably wouldn't even notice.

Come on out! This thing is sitting in a field a couple of miles from my house. I'd love to have it as a second bus one of these days, but if some bus nut were interested I'd sure put him on it. As you say, these things are not all that common.

All it needs now is a 12V92. What a rig that would make.

I've only seen one that kept the proportions right, and that one was stretched to 45 feet long. That bus had MASSIVE work done to it in order to make that happen. (Owned by Pat McNeil)

I can think of one advantage though if you did it all the way to the front. You could set it up to use 4104 windshields and rear glass. Finding curved glass for the 4501 is challenging, and expensive.

Just a silly question, but what are the original part numbers for the windshields and rear glass on a Scenic?
Title: Re: Slide out in a GM bus
Post by: kyle4501 on August 24, 2007, 05:34:41 PM
Dallas-
Rear glass = UNOBTANIUM
Upper windshields = PATMCNEIL
Lower windshields = PATMCNEIL & various other sources if your search is lucky

Michael, the quality of work I saw is truely impressive on Pat's bus. But, I'll have to disagree with you concerning the proportions. something about the window placement & the 5+ feet added to the lower section - just seems a little off to me. But MAN does his 8V92 sound good! Probably only one on the road that has been balanced & blueprinted.

Newbee, You get her here & I'll deal with the required paperwork at the orphanage  ;D

Songman, lower the floors to get the interior height you need, you will still have more roon in the bays than NewbeeMC9 has in his  ;D

Oh, I'll admit it looks a little off, but if you didn't know, and there wasn't another right next to it, it would take you a bit to figure out what the difference was. OTOH, I saw a pic somewhere of a scenic that just had the raise dine, and it looked really out of proportion.

Rear glass? Heh, that stuff is true unobtainium. I'm still deciding what I want to do about mine. The large center panel was just covered with cheap plexi, but the two corner pieces are intact originals.

Cheap plexi sounds GOOD to me  ;D

If I ever win the power ball, I'll have the rear glass made & all the front curved glass - in the 'proper' tint at that!

So you guys need to send me the winning ticket!  ;D
