Has anyone installed any of the new Carrier low profile 7.5" roof air units. Is the fan noisy? Any other comments appreciated before I order them.
Steve,
Are the low profile units available as heat pumps? If so, go with the heat pumps. If not, as much as I like my Carrier 15K HP (not a low profile, though), I'd go with whatever was available in a heat pump and as a low profile.

I think the fans are fairly noisy, although I don't really have anything to compare them to. I just like quiet, so much so I put solar on so I won't have to listen to my very quiet generator. I only run the airs when I absolutely have to. I think that any fan is too noisy.
When I bought my carrier units, they were not available with heat pumps.
I installed two ducted units and one unit that used the standard plastic vents that extend the 2" down from the ceiling.
As I mounted them off center, I built my own duct box, and centered that, so the part the extends down from the ceiling is centered in the bus. Only the grill is off center, and it looks fine.
I raised the roof 8" then dropped it down 4" and ducted the roof air and we can hardly hear ours run, we have Dometic 15000 low profile A/C.

I have installed 2 low profile Carriers on a customers bus. I did not notice much difference in fan noise level from other roof ACs. (Course, I don't wear my hearing aids when I am woeking on buses. LOL) Last he checked, the heat pump is now available in ducted only. Since we have his ceiling all finished, he has opted to wait to install the 3rd AC, hoping that the heat pump will be available with the standard inside trim. Jack

I just looked at Carrier's site http://www.airv.carrier.com/details/0,2806,CLI1_DIV46_ETI9772,00.html?SMSESSION=NO (http://www.airv.carrier.com/details/0,2806,CLI1_DIV46_ETI9772,00.html?SMSESSION=NO). It appears that heat pumps are available in non-ducted as well as ducted models. They finally have a wall thermostat for the non-ducted models; that wasn't available when I bought mine. I'll add a second unit soon. I hate to have mismatched roof A/C's, but I'll probably eventually replace the current one. That way I'll have two low-profile heat pumps.
As to mounting them, mine is mounted off-center. I didn't want to cut the main frame section. I think you can have the unit straddle the frame. I haven't looked in the inside section lately, but I believe this would work well. I'd squirt the frame full of expanding foam where it passes through the air return. The problem I had mounting mine centered is that one of the people who ride in the bus is 6'2". The inside section is about 2.5" deep. With it mounted in the center where one walks, it took too much head room. It's slightly towards the sofa as it's mounted and isn't in the way.
They're available on eBay new by a seller in Florida for reasonable prices. Let me know if you can't find the seller and I'll see if I can find him.

The ducted Carriers can be mounted to straddle the center beam. Just cut the hole around it, and leave the beam. The air will flow around and will not be restricted by the relatively small beam.
The one that uses the Carrier panel on the inside has the output duct in the center, and it would be a lot more difficult to center mount and leave the beam.
I'm not sure what the heat strip models are like.
Heat stip models with the Carrier inside panel also have the output ducted in the center. The bus I installed these in had already been prepped by cutting the center beam and welding in support around the openings
