Title: Personal message MAK Plyons
Post by: jjrbus on August 18, 2007, 08:17:33 AM
I recieved a personal message from Plyons via MAK publishing bulliten board. My McAfee virus protection says not to open it.  Is this a legitimate email? Anybody else getting it?

I also received one yesterday. That is the avenue that when someone sends you a personal message when they look at your profile. It should also say who sent you that message from the MAK Board. HTH

I had no virus alert on my end.

Happy Trails,

Paul

JJR,

If Phil sent you one via the BBS, you should have a message in your "my messages" on the top of MAKs home page and it will also be sent to your email account.

If you don't have one on here I would wait to find out.

On the "to do" list to fix.  I need to get it back to saying busconversions.com instead of plyons.

Thanks for reminding me.   :(

A man's work is never done.   :D

Best Regards, Phil

Jim,
If you happen to use Yahoo for a web based mail server you may notice that you get unwanted emails with familiar sounding names.

As an example, I had a pet name for my son when he was little, (He'll die if he finds out I posted this!  ;D ), Pooh.
I used that name in an email address nickname for him once a long time ago and now I get spam emails from users named Poohxxx@yahoo and ldjushyonPooh@yahoo and just plain Pooh@yahoo, etc.

Don't ever believe that Yahoo is a secure email address. They have had a history of selling email lists and names many times.

Another thought..
If you forward something to a lot of people, and this goes for everyone here, DON'T use the "CC:" function!! Use BCC:
The reason being that if one of the persons you are forwarding to has a trojan or email worm working in the computer using CC: it will allow that person and that virus to see every email address that the forward was sent to, and the virus to collect all those names and forward them on.
BCC: only shows the email of the current recipient, and while not totally secure, is better than passing lot's of addresses around the 'net.

IHTH,
Dallas

I use Hotmail!  Bob had sent me a PM via the MAK board. It went to my junkmail folder. McAfee for some reason said not to open it! I posted to find out if it was a legitiate email or spam or virus.
On another note some thing we can do to cut down spam.  I receive and forward a lot of jokes, spiritual things etc. A zillion $$$ worth of internet to send a joke to the Philippines!!!
Anyway when we receive a forwarded item, if we decide to send it on, after clicking on forward You can highlight all the previous address's and delete them. This function only works when you get to where you forward the message, it will not work before. This will greatly cut down the number of address's available to spams.

Do you have the program called The Cleaner? It works great removing all the marks like this > that are on the forwarded jokes and other emails?

It is called "The Cleaner". Don't know where I found it and really do not know how to find it again or how to find it on the computer so I could forward it, but it really works great. Any of you computer guru's know how to help me find it?
Richard

This might help someone find it:

This is for those of you who distribute a lot of jokes.  I got tired of cleaning up all of the Unix reply marks ('>') and the lines that got chopped up by multiple word-wrapping.  So, I decided to write up a really quick application that does all of this for you.

To use it:
1) Copy the joke or list from your mail program to the clipboard as you always do.
2) Run the Cleaner application and hit either F1 or Alt-C or click on the Smiley Face icon.  The program pastes the joke from the clipboard, cleans up the text, and then copies the modified text back to the clipboard.
3) From there, go back to your mail program, open a new message and paste in the cleaned up message.

The specific changes that are made to the text are:
- Eliminates leading whitespaces and '>' characters.
- Ensures one and only one space between words and two spaces after each period.
- Combines lines that are in the same paragraph (so that sentences will be split up by word wrapping, instead of having a fixed width.)
- Doesn't concatenate sentences that start with numbers or bullet points.  (For numbered lists that don't end with periods...)
- If the first line is followed by a blank line, that line will be treated as a title and will not be combined with the next text line.

Notes:
* This program is freeware.
* This is a Windows95/98/NT (Win32) only application.
* Some cleanup will probably still be required, but it should simplify things by quite a bit.
* The text cannot be larger than 32,000 characters, but that shouldn't really be a problem...
* This application was written using Borland C++'s ObjectWindows Library.

Well, enjoy!  If you have any suggestions, just let me know...  Feel free to distribute this if you know anyone that might actually appreciate this program.

Version 1.02 Changes:
- Fixs bug that put two spaces after quotation marks.
- Removes 'Save File' confirmation message when quitting, since most work is done in the clipboard anyway.
- Adds options dialog to allow you to configure The Cleaner more to your liking.
