O.K. I have an oil cooled/air cooled diesel genset. I have set up a remote oil cooling system. I am designing the sound barrier box to help with the noise. I want to also have 110 volt ac fans that run (temperature controlled) basically whenever the genset is on. Should I set the system up to pull cool air into the box or push hot air out of the box or both?
I realize this is a unique application but given the costs of the new genset and my total KVW, this works for me. The unit is about 45 inches wide, 30 inches tall and 26 inches deep.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Either way should work, Grant..providingthere's sufficent airflow for both cooling and combustion. You could try one fan and test it under full load using a relatively inexpensive Indoor-outdoor thermometer from Radio Shack or a pyrometer to monitor enclosure temperature. If it's too hot for your liking you could add another fan.

When we enclosed our old Onan air cooled gasoline generator in a sound box, we added an oil temperature gauge mounted in the bus to help monitor engine temps (since there is no water to monitor). We also installed one of the alarm systems from Jim Shepherd (RV Safety Systems) that gives you a digital readout of ambient air temperatures in both the engine and generator compartments.
On our Onan, we relied on the blower that was part of the Onan OEM set up. We had an opening approx. 10"x12" near the top of the compartment on the end opposite the blower. Ambient air temperature inside the box never exceeeded 120*. YMMV, monitor the temps to prevent premature engine/generator failure. Jack
When I built my sound box, Dick Wright suggested to push air into the box.
Ok I'm probably missing something here.
On my class C all I did was use a black cloth fiberous type furnace filter behind the expando metal.
It quieted the noise quit a bit.
That is all I was going to do for the bus. The gen is in the old AC compartment.
Waste of time? (does it require a sound deadening box?)

It depends on how loud your genset is and how quiet you want it to be. I can hold a normal conversation right next to it when its running. the loudest thing is the fan.
