Guys, I'm not a big fan of Slate.com (bunch of kooks), but here is a well researched and well written review of some portable air conditioners.
In case you're interested. ;)

I remain completely convinced ALL portable air conditioners only cool your wallet. Unless it has separate hoses for condenser air in and out it simply can't work in a high humidity area. I was seduced by great EER ratings (15.2) of the Sunpentown portables, I bought 2 10,000 BTU/h units and used them in my bus for over a year. They would never cool the bus more than 8 degrees f. below outside even though I had ducted outside air to the condenser inlets. I replaced them with an 18,000 BTU/h ductless mini split. Today it hit 103 & the bus is in full sun the temperature in the bus stayed under 75. That,s 20 degrees cooler than the portables with only 90% of the rated capacity. Tell me why! Oh by the way my energy use is up, it's now 14 amps was 12. My only explanation is the portables are rated very DISHONESTLY.
