Title: fuel tank for black grey water combo tank?
Post by: grantgoold on August 07, 2007, 10:13:20 AM
o.k, same question just a bit of a twist. What about using a fuel tank for the black/grey water tank combo?

Now you're on to something...although there are those who feel that urine and metal of any kind will lead to eventual failure.

It should be fine. Passivation may help prolong the tank life.

What are your needs from your conversion? How you are planning to use it will effect your waste water storage needs.

If you practice water management, you can go a long time with 50 gallon combined waste. In my experience, washing dishes creates the most grey water (assuming you are taking 'navy' showers).

There are tricks to minimize black water storage needs-
Use a non-stick cooking spray in the toilet before using to minimize sticking.
Don't put paper in the toilet (-it is already in your hand, so put it in a trash bag in a small trash can) You'd be surprised how much less water is needed per flush.

With this practice, a combined waste tank makes the most sense as the grey will dilute the super concentrated black.

Happy trails! (ewwww, I hope they're not from a leaking tank  :o )

Our combined black/grey tank is a 75 gallon step tank off of Ford Ln7000.
We've been using it for about 3 years with no problems except a leaky seal on the grey water input.
If we take Navy showers or spit baths we can go for 7 days between dumps.

I was originally going to build a pair of plastic tanks but found this tank near where we use to live. The owner gave it to me and it's dimensions are almost perfect for the space I have to put it in. I think I figured it out to be about 5 gallons less than I would been able to get if I had built the separate plastic tanks.

Go for it!

PS: Maybe you could use the sending unit to operate a "poo gauge"! too bad mine didn't come with one.
