Title: Water pump pressure switch - repair or replace?
Post by: John Z on August 03, 2007, 07:24:14 PM
Starting to get ready for a short trip coming up next week and my water pump does not shut off. It still builds up pressure, but just keeps on running.

Is the pressure switch something that can be repaired? Or should the pump or switch just be replaced?

John,

First try removing the incoming line and see if there is a bunch of crud built up in it.

Next, make sure there is no air in the line on either the incoming or the outgoing side.

Both of those conditions will allow the pump to run overtime and not shut off.

Even a small leak on the incoming side will allow the pump to suck air and possibly won't leak water.

A leak on the outgoing side will cause a leak as the pressure can't build up.

If there is stuff is built up in the incoming line, the pump can't pull enough volume and will continue to run.

IHTH

Dallas

PS, I may have an extra pressure switch if you tell us the make and model of the pump.

Thanks Dallas, i will check this out tomorrow first thing, and will let you know what i find. Just got the bus back from my wheel bearing/axle/spindle failure, which also caused me to replace the brake drum, shoes and everything else on that corner. Fixing the water pump actually sounds like fun now!!!

Dallas, your advice was right on! Removed the pump and cleaned very well. Also removed pressure switch and cleaned it. Put it all back together and it is working well. There was a fair amount of crud and grit on the incoming water line. I appreciate your help!
