Title: Strangers Boarding the bus
Post by: H3Jim on July 26, 2007, 10:08:55 PM
The same day I almost went under the low bridge, another funny thing happened, that I guess does happen frequently, but its the first time its happened to me.

Just after I let my family off, a woman came from out of the airport and tried to board the bus.  I'm not sure what she was thinking, or where she though I was going to take her.  I think my bus looks pretty much like a motor home, but maybe thats only to a trained bus nut.  I was kind of dumbfounded.  Too bad she wasn't better looking.

Any one else out there have some funny stories about strangers trying to board?

Louise and I were in Las Vegas, staying at the Treasure Island.  This is back in the days before we were living aboard full-time, so there were no pets with us, and we actually stayed in the hotel and parked the bus in the oversize lot, waaay in back.

When we checked out, I went and got the bus, and Louise waited with the luggage in the hotel's enormous porte-cochere.  When I wheeled around and under the canopy, some guy comes up to the door, bags in hand, and asks if this is the bus to the airport.  I just said "no," but, in hindsight, I should have said "in your dreams, buddy," or any of a thousand other wise-cracks.

On a similar subject, we constantly monitor the CB when we are driving, and we often hear truck drivers talking about us.  (Number one most common comment:  "Damn, that guy is sittin' way down low -- shoot, his a$$ is draggin' on the ground!" -- I swear I am not making this up.)  One day, on I-10 heading west towards Quartzsite, we heard a bunch of drivers speculating about who the celebrity was that we must have on board.  At some point, our mischievous side got the better of us, and I got on the radio and told them it was the Girls Gone Wild bus (they had passed us and were a good ways in front by this time).  Boy, that got them worked up into a frenzy all the way to the Q.

Nowadays, by the way, when some stranger walks up and asks who I've got on board, I just tell them that I can't say.  If they press me, I then say that, no, really, I would lose my job.

Dallas was inside our bus at a flea market and a man just walked right in.  When Dallas asked him what he thought he was doing and explained that it was our home, the man said "I just wanted to look inside".  No knocking, asking or anything.

Another time I had a man start to walk right past me to get into the bus.  I kinda blocked him and asked if I could help him.  He said he just wanted to look inside.  I asked him where his motorhome was and told him that while he was checking out mine, I would go check his out.  He got a bit miffed and walked off.  Way I see it, turn about's fair play.  Cat

I've had several strange people board my bus. Unfortunately most of them are my relatives.

When we were coming back from Key West a few years ago, several people were on the side of the road in a small parking lot.  I slowed down, as they were pretty close to the road, and didn't want to run over anybody.  As I slowed, they grabbed their luggage and got in line.  As I rolled by the bus stop, we exchanged "what in the world" glances.

I have come to the conclusion that a lot of folks have more curiosity and less brains than is good for them. Therefore, my doors stay locked at all times. Phyllis & I both have keys & we use 'em. It's a lot easier than trying to put out a "visitor" after having shot them with my flare gun.

Basically the same kind of idiot who lets his kids get on my motorcycle, then thinks I'm rude for telling him off.

On our Feb trip to Texas and Louisiana we had stopped for a quick night's sleep at a WalMart. I had walked to the store for juice and rolls, and when i got back there was a young boy about 15 or 16 standing at the bus door. He was just standing there like he was waiting for the door to open. We talked a bit after i told him it was our motor home.

Later on the way home we again had spent the night in a WalMart lot. In the morning while seated at the dinette we both noticed a few mini-vans circling us. We didn't know what was going on. Finally one of them pulls up, stops, and a guy gets out and walks up to the window. "Are you going to Natchez?" he asked me, which surprised the dickens out of me, cuz that was the next town we were headed to. "Ah,,, yeah we are" i replied. He looks toward the front of our bus and asks "wheres the driver?" "I am the driver" i said as i took another bite of my waffle. I asked him "why do you want to go to Natchez?" He grinned and said "casina,,, bigggg casina!" About then i noticed a tour bus loading up next to a restaurant across the lot from us. I pointed over there and told him "i think thats your bus over there." He just chuckled a bit, shook his head and left!

Ahh, what fun!

A few years ago, I was driving a charter for our local shag club to a beach music festival.  During the day, I was sitting in front of the bus and a gal in a stars and stripes bikini asked if she could borrow our restroom. Uh, hey, I'm as patriotic as the next guy, ya know!!??  Took a lot of ribbing over being so courteous. HEE! HEE!

Many years ago I was driving a ex Tamiami Trailways 1958- PD4104 that was a historical coach still in the red Trailways paint style and colors (red & white).
My wife and our two young daughters were along for the trip to Florida from Texas to visit Grandma for Thanksgiving.
We were between Pensacola and Tallahassee,FL on I-10 heading east.
I noticed up ahead about 10 to 15 Mexicans under a overpass trying to stay out of the cold rain.
When they saw this old PD4104 coming they all ran out next to the highway and attempted to flag me down.
Needless to say I didn't even slow down but as I went by the all gave me the bird salute. ::)
Funny folks think our old buses are still in revenue service and the driver is going to stop and let them on.

A few days ago we left a bluegrass fest in Columbus Ohio and while waiting at a light the car beside us rolled down their window and the guy leaned out and asked what "celebrity" I was driving for, I said "I'm not supposed to say but it's the Swedish Bikini Team" lol, he looked at me in awe and said he'd kill for that job lol, from the looks his wife gave him I think maybe he was headed for the couch for sleeping the next few nights lol.

Several years ago I was driving my GM old look to paint shop.  It was still in the rust coores primer in which I'd purchased it.  Going past three different bus stops, people rushed out to flag me down.  Oh, and the destination sign read "Burnham School for Girls."

I was bringing my bus from Hollywood, FL to Hickory, NC on a drop deck.  I pulled into a Pilot truck stop with a shop in Bowman, SC.  There was a broken down tour bus there and everyone was standing around outside.  It was all I could do to keep from pulling up and telling them it was their replacement bus!
