on my 8v71 i know there are many types of buffer switchs and updated 1s,i have the square type as it follows on my switch (3) screww holes. (1) says, norm closed (2) says, norm open (3) says. common.
the old owner had all 3wires hooked together in screww hole #2 (2) norm open, all 3 wires where together hot from dash on?off switch and1 from each head how is the normal way to hook the buffer switch up?as it is now i turn jakes on and engine stall at idle it stall it self and that i dont think is normal nore is the way it was hooked up< pic would also be nice thanks johnjem 1970 gmc 4905 ihope i explained it good let me now
Put the wires to the head to the N.O. contacts. The one from the dash switch to the common. If I understand what you were saying, it sounds like you have it all wired together bypassing the buffer switch.
thats the way it was and it was not working properly i did not hink all the wires should have gone together
Are you able to take the bus out on the road? It is not as easy to test while sitting still. You have to get the revs up to get them to activate. I cannot go into a lot of detail because I am still at work. Someone needs to step in and fill in the gaps I am leaving.
i just what to wire them up the right way and fixing the hack job that was left when i bought it!As they are now they are not right! then i can take it out on the road :)
Theres a down and dirty Jake schematic I just did

When I activate my jakes with the engine "free wheeling" (out of gear with me at the back working the throttle by hand), my jakes barely activate. I might get a faint second out of them before the rpms are too low to keep them activated. So, yours might be working fine, and you will have to wait to take a trip around the block to know for sure and test them correctly. I wouldn't spend too much time on them until you get on the road. They are nice to have, but you can go along time without them if there are other things that are more pressing keeping you off the road....HTH.
Did you check the Jake brake website? 8)
I had a problem where somehow my throttle cable got shorter and was no going to the no fuel position all the time and had intermittent jakes ... that was a head scratcher. When I was at the back of the bus moving the throttle linkage by hand and pulling it back to the no fuel position it worked fine but I tried it from the seat they wouldn't work.
