Title: odometer does not work
Post by: Danny on July 19, 2007, 09:38:29 PM
My Odometer does not work on MCI 102a3.  What are he most common causes of this going south?

Thanks,
Danny

Do you mean speedo? If so, test the sensor behind the left front wheel with a ohm meter using the procedure in the manual. That's how I fixed mine in a 102A3. I needed a new one.

The speedometer you have in your bus may not be original equipment. If so the book will be of no help. Does it say MCI on it?

Danny more than likely the sensor as mentioned above, or could be the wires in between it and the speedo, or the speedo head itself! Or it could be that the adjustment is way out, or the brake drum could be missing the bolts that the sensor picks up from.
First check the back of the brake drum on the left front wheel. On the drum itself you should fine either 2 bolts directly across from the other or 4 bolts 90* from each other! Then locate the sensor mounted close to the drum that has 2 wires going from it into the body, which ends on the back of the speedo head. If you jack the wheel up you can spin it to where one of the bolts is matched with the sensor, if you can just fit a nickel between them you fine on adjustment! Should not be so far that there's much more than that, and should be able to slide nickel in and out easily! Then check the wires make sure they haven't been cut or spliced! And if they are ok check them with an ohm meter to be sure theres not a break or short that's not visable. If you have found a problem you can check the sensor with an ohm meter. I don't remember the specs but someone else might know them of their head. Or call MCI tech support, they will give you them. If all that checks out ok it'll be the speedo head itself!

Who cares?!?  Mine has never worked!  Get a GPS, as it's much cheaper than repairing your speedometer and a lot more fun, and considerably less aggravation.   YMMV.....glenn hanson, MC9

Who cares? ... apparently the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania does.  When the speedometer/odometer quit in my 4104, my local service station told me they could not pass me on the state inspection until it was repaired or replaced.  It was replaced.

Register bus in state without inspection! ;D

Howdy!

Another option would be to install one of those hub-odometers that you often see on trucks as well as buses.  They're usually mounted on the right drive axle.  Simple installation.  I believe several manufacturers make them...Engler comes to mind.

Good luck! - Steve
