Post by: 82 MCI-9 on July 18, 2007, 09:51:41 AM
I am taken out a 6v92TA out of another bus that i have and am wondering what the best way would be to store it? I don't need it right now its only for an extra. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Robert

Robert, flush the water system good and refill the engines water system with the right anti freeze and water you also need to remove the injectors clean and lube put in a plastic air tight bag I did just like you and bought a spare engine and did not read the book on how to store it ,all the injectors stuck and the o rings on the liners leaked along with the water pump when it was ready to be used and I don't know why DD wants new oil in the engine before storing  good luck

Robert the manual will give you good instructions for pickling your engine. It's a labor intensive process, but I've seen aluminum 3-53's come out of storage after 40 years that fired right up when placed back in service.

Luvrbus,

DD wants new oil in the crankcase because used oil contains organic acids that will eat parts of the engine over a period of time. Used oil also contains water which can sit on parts and cause rust.

All that said, depending on how long your engine is going to sit without use, it may just be enough to coat the injectors with cosmoline or axle grease, seal the air intake and the exhaust, fill it with new oil, add a new filter and coat the interior of the water jacket with a rust inhibitor, like antifreeze.

We bought a DD used as a donkey motor for high lead logging that had been sitting in the woods for well over 15 years that had never had anything done to it as far as pickling. Once we changed the fluids and filters, the old engine roared to life and ran great for the 4 years we used it.

Naw, It was a 6-110. One heck of a big mama with it's cradle, winches, gears, radiators and tower.

Thanks Guy's,the DD manual is the only one that i don't have yet. I am not exactly sure how many miles the motor has on it it was rebuilt by DD in 2000 and it is in a transit bus so I will probably rebuild it sometime in the future.

Robert the best/easiest way to do it is send me a plane ticket, give me $1,000.00 for fuel & expenses and a credit card for any emergencies the could come up. And I'll fly out there, bring the bus back to my shop, pull and store the engine for you! And when you need it if it's already in use we'll pull it out and shio it too you or find you another one in as goodas or better shape! LOL!  ;D BK ;D

That's fine, but if that's the case, I'll have to charge for the travel time flying out there, the driving it back, the labor of removing of the engine, the disposal of the bus, and the storage & prep! See I was gonna do all that probono on the very likely chance that we'd find a use for it, before you did! LOL! So ya see I'd be charging quite a bit more than you would! So ya might wanna re-figure on those usage fees! FWIW !D  BK  ;D

From a different vain....

I'll be getting my spare engine next month and instead of storing it I'll tear it down so I know what it needs for a
rebuild. Then I'll start gathering the parts I need for the rebuild plus some added goodies  ;D

Once I have the parts gathered I'll put it together swap out engines. Then sale off the rto.

   Just another way I guess

maria-n-skip that sounds like a good idea instead of going through the trouble of getting it ready for storage i could just tear it down and do it little by little. Thanks Robert

Bk -- in that case i think that you would win. I think keeping it would be cheaper unless you want to rebuild it for free ::) ;D
