I tried to get to a vintage bicycle swap this weekend and only made it about 5 miles from home. I need an axle for the driver's side (not sure if they are different).
Does anyone have a spare sitting around they are not using? Or does anyone have access to a parts manual for the 4104 and can give me the GM part number for it?
Thanks.
may have one what is the Inch's from the inside flange to the end of axle

Right now i don't know that. The bus was towed to a neighboring town. The guy just called to tell me that it was the axle that was broke. I will be going over there later today, just before they close and i can ask them. I am not even sure if they have the inner part removed yet.
The left and right are not the same and the one that I have is out of a 4104 and I don't know if it is left or right.

Oh man John! I'm sorry you had that happen. Is this more fallout from your last drive?
Thanks Brian. Yeah, the best guess by those who know way more about it than i do, is that the intense heat from the wheel bearing failure caused the axle to fail. It snapped about 1' in from the flange.
My daughter has planned an August trip, so i am just happy i decided to take a few bikes to the swap meet, or this may have happened just as we were leaving on our vacation trip!

Sorry to hear of your latest problem. At least you were close to home.
I assume you are talking about the rear axle. If so, I have the attached info from the parts book. Because of file size, I think I need to break this into two posts

...and the second post ...
Thanks Wayne. Yes, it is the rear axle. Thanks for posting the pages with the info. I do appreicate the help.
JOhn I have some axles, Beleive they are new, unfortunately they are not handy right now, how soon do you need it.
I'll see if I can dig one up

Thanks everyone for your help. I have located an axle just a few hours away from me, and will be driving down to pick it up on Thursday.
It still amazes me how well this group of people function, coming up with info and resources. Thanks again everyone.
I hope your vacation goes better. You've had problems the last few times out.
Thanks Brian. My mom always said bad things happen in threes. Yesterday afternoon i got a call from the service manager where my bus is parked right now. We were having some pretty strong winds (arounds 60 - 70 miles an hour). The manager told me that the wind had tore off my TV antenna and it was dangling down the side of the bus by the coax! So maybe that is it for me and this bus. I can only hope so, i am starting to get a bit gun shy about even moving it.
The axle probably failed from the bearing problem but not from the heat. When the inner bearing fails, the load tries to pivot the hub around the outer bearing and this load is applied to the axle. The axle is not designed for this type load and fails near the flange; a torque failure of the axle usually occurs at the spline end. If the outer bearing fails, the inner bearing pushes the hub off the end of the housing. Your axle was probably cracked during the bearing episode and just needed time for complete failure.
Good luck on your trip,
Lee
