Hey there, I am putting out a ton of black smoke from my exhaust, and I was wondering if I am doing a whole lot of damage to the engine. My plan is to tune the fuel injectors and put in a new air filter, oil filters, etc. once I get the time in Denver in 3 weeks. Any chance I am damaging my engine significantly? Also, I failed emissions in Colorado, if anyone has any advice about that. Thanks!
You probably need a new air filter. My 8V92ta produces no black smoke when running down the road, only smokes from a dead stop from turbo lag.

Dakell, I barely passed CO emissions with my normally-aspirated 8V71 and C65 injectors. And it gets real ugly when I try to head west on I-70.
In addition to your air filter, make sure that your turbo is providing adequate boost. You're not getting enough air and/or there's too much fuel. I feel your pain!
Where abouts are 'ya in CO? I'm 35 miles north of Denver in Longmont.

Daskell,if you have 9g90 injectors in your engine and do not have a bypass blower,a tv8511 turbo and a fuel modulator you will get a lot of smoke also if this was a upgrade from a smaller engine sometimes people do not upgrade the air filter mine 15in around 24in long with 7in openings good luck
I am in Denver country, but actually I am running my rig as a tour bus for some musicians out of denver (kinetix, if it rings a bell). Right now I am in Chicago, and i am putting out a ton of black smoke. Do you know any good mechanics in Denver or around Colorado that could work on the engine for me? Daskell, 2-stoke mechanics are getting harder and harder to find. There's always Stewart & Stevenson, and they're just about anywhere. Who know if their "young-uns" can do a good job on a 2-stroke, though. The guy that rebuilt my DD for the previous owner is up in Nunn, CO...

I'm told he only works part-time now, since he's getting up there in years. And I really, really want to question him about why he suggested to "upgrade" the injectors to C65's and keep the timing standard when he did the out-of-frame on mine. It's a great recipe for smoke! He also kept in the old starter (which I had to replace) and left a bunch of the old lines and coolant hoses, etc. in place. Seemed pound-foolish if someone had the mill out of the bus. Maybe the PO's budget was dictating some of this.

PLEASE get a new air filter element immediately! And yes you are hurting your engine-especially considering that Chicago is near to sea level. Black smoke is running rich, and creates a tremendous amount of heat. With the fact that a new air filter is about $100, isn't that much cheaper than a $10,000 overhaul? Just go to any truck parts dealers that handle your air cleaner make (Donaldson, Farr, etc) and order a new one. Most likely have it within a day. DO NOT wait for 3 weeks to get it done. Is this something that came on suddenly or developed over time?
If it started suddenly, it more likely is a turbo leak. If it started and gradually got worse, it may be the air filter or possibly the injectors.
I think you said it is a '95 model. It should have been delivered with the correct air filter. They aren't that hard to find. Carquest could get it pretty quick if they didn't have it in stock.
I'd look for an air leak between the turbo and the blower. It is also possible that the turbo is shot.
