Title: 6V92 Air Compressor Governor
Post by: chris4905 on July 05, 2007, 12:10:40 AM
I'm doing an engine change.  Taking the 8V71 out of my GMC 4905, and replacing it with a 6V92.

The 8V71 has a governor mounted on the side of the air compressor, with an air line going to the Governor.  I understand the Governor is used to control the air cut in and cut out.  No problem so far......

Here is where I'm confused......
The 6V92 does not have a Governor mounted on the side of the air compressor, and only has an air fitting.  From what I can tell the 6V92 never had a Governor mounted on the side of it, and it appears only an air line connected to the fitting.

Do some model air compressors have a built in Governor?????, or what gives?

I have the 6V92 engine manuals, but they don't address air compressors.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this for me.

Chris,
The Governor can be mounted either on the governor or remotely, it doesn't matter as it's the same governor.

Just take it off the old compressor and mount it on the bulkhead and run the line from the 92 to it.

You could most likely take the compressor off the 8V and put it on the 6V if they both are in the same gear hole at the rear.  Some vehicles have the air governor mounted on the air/water separator.  Good Luck, TomC

Thanks to Dallas, Tom & BK.............

The air compressor on the 8V71 is worn out, so I'll be using BK's suggestion and taking the governor off and putting it on the 6V92 compressor.

Thanks again fellas..........I'm sure there will be more questions before I'm finished with the change-out.

Currently matching the 8V71 engine cradle to the 6V92.......the fun never stops. LOL
