Title: Primer pump
Post by: edvanland on July 01, 2007, 02:57:53 PM
I recentely changed my old primer pump and then changed the filters.  Opened the valves and primed the filters, yes I had filled them with diesel.  Everything worked as it should.  Then I headed to Quartzsite, this was in Feb 2007.  I noticed a lack of power and the engine surged, for lack of a better word.  I could not find what was wrong.  Well last week I took it to the Detroit Diesel people in Phoenix, WW Willams, nice people expensive but nice. I wanted it put on the dyno to try to find out what was wrong. Before they put it on the dyno they started checking it out.  It only had 6 PSI of fuel preasure so after some more checking they replaced the fuel pum and filters, still only had 7 PSI.  The mechanic was flusterated.  I went back to see what was going on, course they don't want you in the shop,  while he was saying a few things to the betterment of man kind one valve on the primer system was open.  I asked him abut that and he promply replied I did not touch it, I told him I know.  Well after butting heads we decided to close the valve.  Now I had 70 PSI of preasure.  Started it up ran great.  No need to spend another $200 on the dyno.  While we were discussing this I told him that some dummy had not shut the valve, to which he gave me a blank look, I then told him I was the dummy.  So long story short it cost me $750 for 5 hours of his time and a new fuel pump and filters.  No I am not a mechanic but I know how to put on a fuel pump and I thought I had shut the valve, thinking will get you in trouble every time.  Long story short I will never forget that valve again.  Am I happy with the shop, yes, will I go there again, yes.
Those gremlins are in Arizona, any body want them?

Thanks for sharing with us Ed.  Hopefully someone can avoid repeating this expensive lesson.   ;D   Possibly even me.    ;D  :)

Kind Regards, Phil

I just yesterday paid for a few hours of labor to find an oil leak only to find out it was just the oil filters slightly loose!  The Detroit dealer that changed my oil the last time appparently didn't tighten them enough.  (I wouldn't normally have a Detroit dealer change oil, but I was having the engine and tranny checked over before I took the bus 1,600 miles home.)

I would have been a lot more upset if I wasn't have some other work done too.
