Title: Inverter output
Post by: donnreeves on July 01, 2007, 06:34:53 AM
I have a Xantrex 2512 inverter. I was tracing a small electrical problem with my Pro-heat and found that the output voltage was only a little over 100V.It is running off four 75AH agm's with a full charge. Is this normal for an inverter? I thought it should be closer to 120V.    Donn

Don,
I do believe there are several 2512s, so please give us a more complete model number.  It really doesn't sound 'normal' but if it's not an SW2512, I'm not so sure.  If it is an SW2512 I'm quite sure it has a problem, mine reads 122 while inverting under light load and 120 while delivering 12 amps to my air conditioner.  You might try a different meter as some meters may be confused by the waveshape.

It's an RV2512 modified sine wave. The book says the output should be 120V.I will try a different meter.  Donn

Many digital meters do not like modified sine wave. You really need a true RMS meter to get an accurate reading. Also try applying a load to it.

Donn,

While I was typing this, Richard stole my thunder...

You will absolutely not get a correct reading using a "regular" voltmeter (digital or analog).  In order to properly measure output voltage of your modified sine wave inverter, you definitely need to use a "True RMS" meter -- few models of this type of meter are available for less than $100.
