Title: Search for Members by State
Post by: Eagle on June 25, 2007, 12:56:44 PM
Could it be made possible to search for members by States?

Hi Eagle,

There is one way that I think that could be done real quick.

If we were to get more members to join the help assist list, problem solved, it's allready listed by state!

I was thinking more along the line for members of the Mac Board.

Long ago, Phil was discussing a map as part of this software package but he really got tied up in getting everything working and then the revised package installed.

Maybe he might have time now to resurrect the map project for us. Huh, Phil, Huh?

The Mac Frapper map is just about worthless as you get X number of people close in one state and you can not locate everyone in that state.  Just a suggestion no idea whether it can be done or not but maybe Phil could add a search engine to the Mac membership list to search by states.

And it takes forever to load all the names. I'm still waiting, and my puter is new. I agree with Eagle regarding a states listed with members names and locations.

FWIW,

Although the Frapper map has many shortcomings, I really do not understand the problems that  dreamscape and eagle posted.
Dreamscape:
The map loads for me in less than 60 seconds. Geneerally much faster than that. I am on Cable.

Eagle:
To identify the locations of people, click and drag the whole map until the area you are interested in viewing is in the center of the screen. Then roll the scroll button on your mouse down or up to enlarge the section you are interested in viewing. I just tried it and there was no location in the country where I could not separate the members and pan in until I could see the street they lived on.

The problem with the search engine (that we already have).....

About 90% of the members don't list a town, state, region or continent.

It's not difficult to add the function to look for members by area, but, no one wants to be found I guess.

To bad too. It would make it much easier for many reasons if the members areas were available on their profiles.

Richard,
As you said.... you have broadband connection. Many people don't, especially when on the road trying to use an iffy wifi connection or a slow cell phone connection, or even at home with a standard dialup. With slow connections the Frappr map is a painful experience to say the least.

Oh, and for those of you that don't have a scroll mouse like Richard or a trackball or a marble mouse, try holding down both the left and right mouse button at the same time and move the mouse. This works with Logitec mouses, and may work with others.

Richard,

As I stated earlier in another post. The response time is slow to load all the member locations, it still is, I guess that is the way it works. My connection is fast, so I know it is not that. Then when I scrolled to my dot, it showed up one time, then not the next. I also was very patiently waiting for it to load. Maybe no one else experienced that problem, I just did.
I do not want to make a fuss over it, that's the way it is, so be it. I can live with it. ;)

Happy Trails,

Paul

Paul,
I just tried it two different times and it loaded in less than 10 seconds each time.

It appears as it it still loading as different names keep popping up. Just click on the map and it stops that. I think that is just something in the program to keep jumping around to different members. At least on my computer, after the map comes up and the location spots appear, then when I click on the map, everything appears normal.

I did try and find you, but could not. Maybe you will have to load up again. I really do not know.

Hope this doesn't sound too crabby, but alls ya gotta do is talk the admin of this board into enabling that field in the member list so that it appears in the table. Done.
