Title: Removing Adhesive from interior of 4107
Post by: Runcutter on June 24, 2007, 07:57:13 AM
As some of you know, I'm trying to restore the 4107, forward of the white line, to nearly original.  The previous owner had everything covered in carpet (ceiling, dash, walls).  While we've stripped off most of the carpet, it's left what looks like contact adhesive everywhere.  Since the original conversion was done in 1976, it's old contact adhesive.

We want to preserve the paint - especially the ceiling of the driver's area.  We've been able to peel off some of the adhesive with finger pressure, but it's a big area.  Tried a little Fast Orange/GoJo, but I'm concerned about the pumice damaging the paint.

Does anyone have suggestions for removing this mass of stuff - several square feet?

Thanks.

Arthur,

I had the same problem with my TDH3610.
I ended up using plain ol' minreal spirits to remove the cement. It didn't seem to hurt the paint at all.

We also tried some stuff called Goo-Gone, which worked but was too aggresive for the old paint.

Available at fine hardware stores and home centers everywhere.

Pick some up today!  ;D

There is a solvent out called "Resolve" I think we got it at Wally World. It has done an excellent job for us removing old decal glue and other stuff too, with out damaging any painted surfaces. But just the same I'd try it in a small outta sight area 1st! FWIW BK  ;D

Bryce, thanks.  We were working on the coach on Wednesday, my wife is in charge of removing the adhesive.  Another owner stopped by and suggested Easy-Off Oven Cleaner - I think I like the Resolve idea better.  I'll get some if we don't already have some (it sounds like the stuff she uses to clean cat hairballs off the carpet).

3M makes good adhesive and decal removers.  They are used in the bodyshop so they won't damage paint.  3m products are not cheap.  And resist the idea of using a razor blade to help.  You will always nick or gouge the paint which requires extra prep time.

No problem using Mineral Spirits to remove the adhesive.  But it tends to leave a very light oily film that ~may~ cause fisheyes in the new paint.  The oil repels paint creating small circles in the paint just as you are spraying.  Not good.

Simply wipe the areas to be painted with a prepaint solvent (R&M PreKleeno or similar) prior to sanding and you will be ok.

All auto paint suppliers carry these products.

I have used Easy-Off before too. But not on adheasive residue! We used to use it to remove hand painted lettering and pin striping. Although it did the job and did not bother the original paint. It did take a while and had to be applied several times! FWIW! BK
