Title: Hitch for the MCI9
Post by: grantgoold on June 20, 2007, 11:03:57 PM
O.K., I have started to get ready to make my trailer hitch for the bus.  I will follow others suggestions and retro a preexisting hitch assembly. Anybody want to suggest a good weight rating for the hitch?

I see some heavy duty ones (5,000 lbs)

Your thoughts?

What are you going to be towing?

A car does not usually put a lot of stress on the hitch, almost 0 tongue weight, and the pulling is minimal too.  Its only the braking that puts the bigger stresses on it.

I went with a 10,000 lb hitch, and others I know have gone higher, up to 20,000 lbs.  I don't think I'd go for less than a 10,000 lb rating.

Hi Grant,

I'm rated at 12,000#. :o

If you have room to build it......Do it!  You wont be sorry...

Thanks for the input. Right now the only thing I envision to tow is a simple toad (Honda, saturn.....Hummer ;). I was also thinking (in the future) of a motorcycle tow setup.

I can fabricate just about anything. I will look for a big unit to modify to work for the bus.

Thanks
