Trying to head out this coming week in the bus again and I decided to tackle my intermittent starting problems. Found out that it was my starter solenoid. I do have a few questions.
1. How much for a new one?
2. Will it be hard to find locally? (I plan on leaving Friday so I need it ASAP)
3. If I cannot find one, does anyone have a good used one for sale?
Below are some photos of what mine looked like. I don't know if there were different manufactures and designs of starters for these Detroits, so any education you can give me will be appreciated. BTW, what a pain to get at on these 4106's, and having the auto tranny in the way didn't help much either.
Also I wanted to add my experience on how I got my bus started so I wouldn't be stranded.
There is a cover over the end of the bendix that I removed, and using a long screwdriver, and pushing hard, I manually engaged the starter. It fired right up and I didn't spend anytime on the side of the road. See photos below in hopes that this makes more sense.
Its a common electrical part. Auto electric rebuilders and Delco Dealers if you want the best.
Delco used to make a rebuild kit for them. I would always keep one in the shop when I had trucks. The rebuild kit does NOT replace the coil so check that BEFORE rebuilding. I used to buy both the rebuild kit and new solenoids from NAPA.
The last one I bought was an import for about $50.00 from an auto electric shop. A genuine Delco was about three times the price.

When I was still at the RR, I used to get the axle alternators rebuilt at a place on Shenandoah Ave., about the 2100 block. Can't remember the name of the business, but I will do a little research and see if I can come up with it. I'll call you if I can find it. They rebuild truck starters, alternators, etc. Also, you might call Fleetpride, on Shenandoah Ave. in Roanoke, at three four four, five one nine six, and see who they recommend. Those guys are usually knowledgeble and willing to help. HTH
