Hello All!
Is there a national chain that offers just a space and hookups, without the swimmping pools and extra ammenities?? We like KOA, but would prefer a cheaper alternative.
Thank you for your help!
Not a national chain but you might check out the Elks.

As was mentioned, many of the Elks facilities have camping available for Elks members, some with connections. The Moose also do this. Both have a list available for members listing the different facilities and what they offer. Jack
Jusdt a thought...
Has anyone tried the newer truck stops with the power supplies for truckers?
I have seen alot of truck stops now with parking slips that they charge you per night to connect.
I beleve it's the "No Idle Law" thing....
wonder what they charge? and if it is something we can also use?

There are many Corp of Engineers built/managed parks all over the country (http://www.recreation.gov). Many I have looked into have 55'+ spots with electric/water and a sewage dump station and sometimes sewer hookups.
The corps is ridding itself of most of its camprounds..if you cannot get ahold of a live person to confirm its existence do not go........Tlhe directories and web sites lie....gg04

Are you sure about this? That is a pretty bold statement that the COE online reservation system is out of date and making invalid reservations. What part of the country have you experienced this problem?
Texas, Oklahoma, arkansas, Missouri, Kansas...just last trip directory and state information centers web connections said they still existed...they didn't ..If you cannot talk to a Live person at the park beware....They are in the process of turning parks over to local governments and selling or giving some to private corporations to run (our favorite two in Dallas) gg04
I can see how directories and State info web sites get out of date when there are changes like that. Those don't get updated in real time. But I would wager that the reservations system on recreation.gov is probably current.
When I called the corps 800 reservation number they said the parks were open and they were not devesting themselves of any properties...same on thier web site 6 months ago...but when we showed up at the parks the names had changed and rates had went up 3 to 5 times what they were when in corp management....(these were parks we had stopped and stayed in every 6 months to a year for the last 10 to 14 years) just saying beware..gg04
I was at Hickory Creek (a COE) in Lewisville just north of Dallas two weeks ago, and the web system, though clunky, worked without a hitch. Would like to know which ones you mention in Dallas? aren't functional when you get a chance. I do think they are turning over Oakland, but am not familiar with others.
Silver lake (turned over to city..2 to 3 times rate) and twin coves which they claimed was now a private company..4 to 5 times old rate... places we stayed while doing great americian truck show in Dallas easy in and out..have been running the roads since 1987 and really hate to see this happen. Contacted corp ,senator , etc to find out under what law divestment was legal..and they all claimed wasn't happening..gg04
Another option for camping is Military installations. Many have camping spots set up for retirees at a steep discount compared to public camping facilities.
There are certain regulations, but if you are an honorably discharged I don't think there are too many problems.
Here is the website for the Army called, "Paths Across America":

I'm sure there are other sites as well.

I know that several of the corps of engineer camps are now State Parks and are fair and reasonable. We stayed at several this year and were very pleased. Some have stores, resturants etc. A fresh trout dinner was just $6.95. Not bad for a very good dinner!

I have always been under the impression that in order to use military installation campgrounds you had to be either on
Active Duty or
Retired Military. Otherwise you can not even get admission to most military installations.

Richard,
It's true that the average run of the mill 2,3,or 4 year soldier isn't allowed to use the campgrounds,....
From Roadtrip America:
http://www.roadtripamerica.com/rv/Military-Campgrounds.htm (http://www.roadtripamerica.com/rv/Military-Campgrounds.htm)
"Located on military bases, military campgrounds provide an option for many people who want to camp in beautiful areas, but prefer not to pay the prices asked for by private facilities. Military campgrounds are restricted to career and retired military, disabled veterans, Department of Defense workers, and various others connected to active service and their guests. Unfortunately, the average soldier who served a short enlistment is not allowed to use the facilities unless invited as a guest. Each campground has slightly different criteria so always check first before you go."

Thanks, Dallas. I made a quick check of that document and didn't find the part you quoted.

Richard,
Look under where it says, "Military Campgrounds by Alice Zyetz" at the top of the page next to the photo of San Onofre Beach campground at Camp Pendleton, California.
The very first paragraph.

GO BUSSING!
The military camping worked pretty good before 911.. timeline for reservations is now longer..but be careful now with what you are carrying in your bus ..you are open for full inspection and some of the common things (guns etc...) are not always allowed...same at national parks..and some states parks now... read rules....be safe gg04
Almost every county in the west has fairgrounds and have RV hookups nothing fancy but usually about 8.00 per night usually have blue and white signs directing you to them.
