Hi fellow bus nuts,
I'm getting tired of fighting the weight of the 8v hanging in the air. There is not much left by way of the steel beams holding it up (rusted through) and I need to remove the engine to make the repairs even though I'm not ready to send it out for a rebuild quite yet. Heck I might even need it back in one more time before that happens.
So with that in mind can anybody tell me the general process of removal? I wont be ready for a couple of weeks yet, but I just want to start to gather tools etc to have everything on hand. Does the trans come with it. I was under the impression that there was a cradle of some sorts there, but there is so much rust and grease and grime that I cant seem to see it. Or not??? I don't have access to a fork lift because of getting one to the back of the bus where it sets but I do have two pallet jacks that I think I can make work for me???

I went through the same process.
That is how I joined the NUT HOUSE.

Well my engine is still running strong, after being pulled and reinstalled in a rebuilt frame.
Ok , yes the tranny comes with it.
We jacked the bus and blocked the cradle, (4 point bolted to the frame) and rolled the bus out from under the powerplant.
8 bolts, to seperate the mounts from frame, then the normal, hoses, wires, linkages, drive shaft etc.
mark the lines & hoses with permanent marker and scrap plastic. securley attached. ( I could hardly make out 1/2 of my markings when it came time to reinstall.

As Bill said ... the tranny comes with the motor.
I used a forklift chained to the front motor mounts, one chain off each fork to the motor mount on the same side.
and I used a tranny jack to support the tranny weight and pulled it out with the forklift.
Down side is you need a concrete floor to do it this way. Installed it back in the same way.
3hrs to pull the 8V71 and 4hrs to install the 8V92ta.

The 71 is around 2400 lbs and the tranny is probably around 800 to 1000 lbs depending on what tranny you have.
