Title: Help needed in Orange County.
Post by: phil4501 on May 19, 2007, 09:40:50 PM
I just broke my 1st/2nd shift rod. It's 9:30 on Saturday night. I am supposed to leave my house at 6:00 am tomorrow morning to meet the guys at the beginning of the 10 freeway. Anybody close to Huntington Beach that has a welder? I really don't want to miss the chance to caravan with 4 other Scenicruisers. Do emergency road service guys usually have weldors on the truck? Can Anybody recomend one if so? Thanks for the help.

Phil, most of the big truck shops have mobil repair with welders. Yellow pages Truck repair. Don't see why you can't put it in 1st gear by hand and get some help somewhere on Beach Blvd. If it broke the rod, how about a piece of pipe with a couple of set screws to slip over the ends from the Home Depo for a temp fix. Maybe 2 pair of Vise Grips and some flat iron would hold it togather for a day or two. Slip some long pipe over the break and stretch 6 rubber bungie cords from end to end to keep it togather. Home Depo is probably closed now but Walmart is a couple miles further north of you. Take a foot of pipe, notch it with a grinder on each end so Vise Grips can hold the splice togather with 1 jaw around the pipe and one on the rod. Want pictures of caravan please.

I can drive it, just no shifting. It broke right where it necks down to thinner rod so the pipe and set screws are a little tough to do. I'll work somthin out along those lines though. I ain't missen this trip. i did call a couple truck repair places and am waiting for call's back. I found a guy willing to do it at 10.00 am but I was hoping to be on the road by then. I will take lots of pics of the trip once I figure out somthing here.. Thanks for the reply
