Title: Turbo fan replacement
Post by: homermandy on May 10, 2007, 09:59:20 AM
On an Eagle15 and TV-5712 turbo, the previous owner said he changed the fan blade on the turbo once a year (because of the brittleness of the fan). Has anyone performed this and if so, where did you get the new fan blade? Thanks

Rebuilding your turbo once a year is just a waste of time and money.  The only way you're going to wear it out in a year is if there is unfiltered air getting by the filter and introducing dirt into the intake air.

I recommend to disregard the previous owners statement.
It is not a regular service item. It should last quite some time.Keep your air intake system clean, all clamps and hoses secure too. The turbine side of the turbo is driven by exhaust gases. The only way you'll have damage to that side is if you have bigger problems - turbo failure, engine failure, etc.
It's a ridiculous statement as far as I'm concerned. Hope this will help you.
Good luck.

Ok, my next question is that my engine is a DDEC2 350HP.  It currently has a Garrett TV-7512 with an A/R of .75.  When I called Detroit Diesel and gave them my Engine Serial Number they told me the engine should have the TV-7512 with an A/R of 1.08.  So I am wondering why my turbo is different and what effect the A/R difference would make on my engine. I know the lower A/R is quicker spool up, but does the maximum boost change accorind to the A/R? Thanks
