Title: Diesel smell in Toad
Post by: GMCRTS on April 30, 2007, 09:05:01 AM
I have a 1979 GMC RTS with 8v71 and a low standard exhaust under the left rear bumper.  To date I have never pulled a toad, never need it yet.  The intention now is to get a new vehicle both for normal use and also use as a toad.  The question is; how much odor does the diesel exhaust leave in the toad?  If it is a problem, what is the best prevention, cover for the front and ventilation intakes?  I personally don't mind the odor, but the girl friend has a different opinion, and the toad is most likely going to double as her go to work vehicle.

I've put a lot of miles on my Jeep behind the bus.  Never any exhaust smell!  However, the amount of dust that came out of the dash vents after running down a dirt road was INCREDIBLE!

We tow a Jeep Grand Cherokee and I have never noticed any diesel smell inside the car. I just asked my wife (she has a much better sense of smell than I do), she said she has never noticed any smell. We towed 2400 miles last fall.  We made a rock guard for the front of the Jeep out of an MC-9 front cap. This may help keep the fumes out??  Jack

The RTS exhaust shoots stright back. If you reworked the pipe to exit the side it is much better.

My RTS usually filled my trailer so bad that visibility was down to 10% one time.
I deflected it off the front of the trailer but didn't help much.

Most MCI coaches exhaust to the side or down towards the road. I changed my pipe to exit to the side
away from the trailer on my MC9 and haven't had any problem since.

Maybe aiming the tip at 45 degrees to the side would help?

I think they did the straight back because of the Radiator location and it's tendancy to suck in soot and fumes.
The only other option is to find the exhaust system that exits above the rear cap like off another RTS setup
with the top exhaust, Maybe somone has one salvage or maybe one from a Flx Metro 870 with some surgery.

My experience is quite opposite of others.  My '82 RTS pretty well rustproofs my toad on long trips and leaves a nice diesel scent - my favoirite  ;D .  It washes off easily and the scent clears from the vents pretty quickly.  My toad is far from new and I actually like the smell of diesel engines, so it isn't really a problem for me.

Chris over at the RTS Yahoo group  (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/RTS-bus-nuts/message/17176) reworked his exhaust to go through the roof and has photos published there.
