Title: Late model MCI will not shut off?
Post by: roadrunnertex on April 28, 2007, 06:16:18 PM
Good friend is on a charter with a late model MCI with a electronic controled Cat engine.
When he tried to shut it off with the stop switch it just keep on running.
It's not a  "J" model.
Any good ideas on shutting it off?

Mine is not a Cat and it's not an MCI but, the electronics on it are fed from a 12VDC breaker in the battery compartment.

I'd start looking in the engine comp or the battery compartment first.

Trip one breaker at a time.

Good luck.

Check the engine room switches that something isn't in "rear run"

happy coaching!

Rear Run switch is definitely the first place to check.
That coach probaly has multiplex wiring. Would have to locate the proper module to test.
Good luck.  8)

I guess that's what scares me about the DDEC and other electronic engines, they do run great, but when  a problem developes... well, me being a mechincal guy and not tec guy... the bus would require a shop and not my tool box.

Boy that's the first time I heard of an electronic CAT not shutting down! Back in the day, when I was trucking before electronics had found there way to diesels I had a pumped up 4 n a quarter Cat that'd pass anything but a fuel pump. One time I had the opposite problem it started dying as if I'd shut the key off, then after sitting 10-15 mins it'd start again then die when I'd hit a bad bump (I was in CHICAGO at the time)! Turns out the fuel shut off soleniod had gone bad. So I took the soleniod off (after dumping the clutch to kill it!) then I cut the rod on the soleniod off with hack saw & reinstalled it and it stayed running all the way home, so I could replace it! I wonder if you have a shut off soleniod not extending the rod to shut off the fuel? I know you said it's eletronically controlled, which I'm not sure how they go about it but something still has to control the fuel shut off! FWIW BK  ???

Up date on problem. :P
Some one has added a unlabeled toggle switch next to the rear engine control switches for some unknown reason to prevent the engine from being shut off from the front or the rear of the coach.
Repositioned the switch and every thing now works normal. ;D
Thanks for the ideas.
