Title: Help 671 BLOWN
Post by: JT4104 on April 27, 2007, 12:30:36 PM
I'm told that my 6-71 block is in such bad shape that it would require major re-milling and an overhaul would run over $12k.

So I'm in the market for a running takeout in good condition.  Because its for the 4104, I need a left handed rotation.

Any sources for such an engine would be most appreciated.

Second, I know I can get a RH 671 at a great price from several sources.  How big a deal is it to convert to LH?  Has anyone here actually done it?

Thanks as always,

Jregard

Not really that hard to change.  You have to make sure the blower is on the left and the exhaust ports coming out of the head are on the right.  To change the direction, have to reverse the camshafts and change the oil pump to a left handed pump (of which you could take from your old engine).  Basically just build the next engine like what you have as an example.

My cylinder bores were also out of round-which I had the block bored .010 over and had new .010 over liners installed.  The one advantage to using your old engine is you know what it has been through and what shape it is in.  Personally, I would rebuild your engine.  $8,000 should be more on par for a rebuild.  Good Luck, TomC

I've got a 6-71 engine out of my 04, i replaced it with an ec turbo. Its been sitting in my yard for a couple of years.  I think  two cylinders froze up. The block is fine and it has a four valve head. I'm in the southern part of West Virginia,  Beckley area.  Come and get it and its yours.
Hope this helps

Thanks all for your info.  I found a recommended source for LH 6-71 rebuilds at a reasonable price, so hopefully my dilemma has been resolved.

Be very careful that they don't find the core unacceptable after you make the deal.

Not sure if this would be helpful but ebay has a listing for a GM8V71 DD thats listed as a "reverse running" engine, the bids are at 2500, it doesn't say much of anything about it tho, the item number is 320108696475, not sure if I'm allowed to put that in here but I saw the listing and wondered if it would help you.
