Ok, Just put in a new air compressor on my 8V71.
The procedure in the "BOOK" said to drain the coolant, but I capped the lines.
Probably lost a gallon of coolant max.
The info in the book on "Burping" the coolant is iffy, if not non exsistant when replacing the compressor.
Since the compressor is fed from the bypass via the rear head, which is about the highest point in the coolant flow.
Do I really need to burp anything, or fill up and doublecheck over the next few start ups?

Cliff, I do not know. But I have a freind that smoked his 8v71 by putting a cooler for the trans and got an air lock. Or so he thinks. Tom Y
So ya see, Cliffy...if you had an MCI it would have high radiators and a large upper coolant tank and it wouldn't require all that burping!! :D
Just throw that baby up on your shoulder and pat it gently on the back! ;D
NCbob
Tom Y,
Yeah, thats why I was asking. No surprizes for me. :o
NCBob,
Your pushing your luck Pal.....I still have those GMC truck emblems and a full bottle of gorilla glue.... ;D
Of course then you would have to insure it for more....LOL ha! :P

Since I didn't get any "real life" feedback, I remembered a guy I know who works for Detroit Diesel and who has 2 stroke experience.
He told me to leave the surge tank open, add coolant to fill and run at idle for about ten minutes.
He advised that since the compressor is in the bypass loop and with the surge open that it will allow any trapped air to be burped out.
I ended up adding a little over a gallon of coolant, which was consistant with what I thought hit the ground.

Isn't there a coolant tap plug on the side of the head of your Bendix compressor? ( Brass plug maybe 3/8 NPT? )
I would have to go look, But I thought there was a plug onthe head that you could pull out to burp the compressor..
Probably wrong as usual.... ::)
