At the inspiring age of 78, John Curry's dream of creating a true "home on wheels" began to unfold. In 2003, he and his wife, Joyce, traveled to Fairbolt, Minnesota, to purchase a 1982 Greyhound MC-9, an old 48-seat bus with no idea how many miles it had traveled. What followed over the next twelve years is a testament to perseverance, ingenuity, and love: John painstakingly gutted the bus, built everything from the floor up with oak cabinetry, a full bathroom, and a fully equipped kitchen, and filled countless bays with water tanks, appliances, even a TV and grill.
Named Hiawatha World, this rolling haven has whisked the Curry's south during chilly winters and across the country on weekend jaunts. And the work never stops. John's ongoing upgrades (like a new starter, generator, and upgraded components) keep things moving smoothly. As they approach their 90s, they're a living reminder that it's never too late to dream big, roll up your sleeves, and hit the open road in style.
