Found someone nearby who says he can make me some new cables, finally got my 2 bad ones all apart. The stretched spring in the photo actually still operated the door with reasonable assist, I'm going to see about putting a turnbuckle in the cable(s) at the door end where there's some room, hopefully be able to "fine tune" the tension.
